Have been doing garage engine idle tuning. Interesting issue regarding a lean engine fuel burn at idle and probably when under load. Leaning out the engine air-fuel ratio, in conjunction with calibrating for best engine timing, created a toxic fume situation in the garage. Too lean an air-fuel mixture results in a lot of engine performance issue, but also a fuel burning issue. The fumes become acidic and are hard on the eyes and such. The corrective action for this is to change the air-fuel mixture to a rich air-fuel mixture, in my case, an AFR of approximately 13 to 13.5. This cleared up the topic fume environment. To determine what was happening, had to do some on-line research to get the answer. Recommended AFR settings to start appear to be: 6 AFR - Rich Burn Limit (engine fully warm) 9 AFR - Black Smoke | Low Power 11.5 AFR - Best Rich Torque at Wide Open Throttle (WOT) 12.2 AFR - Safe Best Power at Wide Open Throttle (WOT) 13.3 AFR - Lean Best Torque 14.6 AFR - Stoichiometric Air-Fuel Ratio Value (Stoich) 15.5 AFR - Lean Cruise 16.5 AFR - Usual Best Economy 18 AFR - Carbureted Lean Burn Limit 22+ AFR - EEC / EFI Lean Burn Limit These values will be used as a guide. I have not had a digital dash tach display for some time. I have looked at the wiring schematic(s), how the OEM wired for the digital dash and such. I operated the engine a couple of days ago with an extra injector connected to the original #1 fuel injector circuit. The Travel Computer (TC) was connected to the system as well. The fuel management system functions worked. Need to do a road test to validate. The digital dash tach did not work. Checked this operation with only one fuel injector connected to the TC tach input, worked the same. This indicates to me that there is a disconnect between the TC and digital dash. More to follow on this. Cheers
