Yes it matters a lot! For plugs to look that bad with C5 3 spark system you must be really rich. Whatever carbs you are running are most certainly in need of adjustment.

ok ...as ive got a dft carb ..the deal here is paul ...the dft carb runs way rich at idle and just off idle ...and if the jets are basiclly stock they run actually lean at higher rpm ...this is typical of any dft carb out of the box bolted on a oldwing ...i worked with mine a very long time before i got the idle dial in ...and im sure also if you are running the least advanced timing curve of the c5 ignition then this rich carb condition extends even higher in the rpm ...when mostly on a road trip the bike will get rather good mpg as its not idling much and mostly running at speed ...

on my bike i wouldnt trade my carb for any other carb set up period ...the progressive 2bl carb is a perfect match for the best induction system a oldwing can have ...but it does take some major dialing in ...canauk in canada seems to have his dialed in quite good in basiclly stock carb form ..ive seen his plugs and they look rather good ...it been my observation the further south you go as in weather heat or whatever the reason is.... the richer a dft runs ...also the hotter the motor runs the richer it runs ...my bike hooch is set to run super cool and its obvious to me it makes more power that way ...im sure if i had two days with your bike id have that bike running with way more power and really great mpg ...now my motor modified from stock but let me tell you ..it is super fast ..can pull the wheel off the ground ...and gets on average close to 50mpg and has got 59mpg before

so yes your biggest problem id say is the carb at the moment and of course you need to be on the most advance c5 timing curve ...

Hey guys, well, guess who the bad boy is?

Me of course! Always is ain't it.

Since I cut the Weber's mixture screw back from 4 turns out it appears to be lot more responsive.

I'll let you know when I get a chance to ride it, now would not be a good time. :salute: :salute:

Joe, hold that thought, I'm gonna get back to ya!

So my buddy Jon from England came back by, via India, Sri Lanka and Greece, hungry to ride, perfect for me to get both bikes set right up.

I was AJ Foyt and he was my test driver, making tiny adjustments each run.

The Harley was first and it's now smooth and running perfectly.

Then we started on the Oldwing, I told him, you know you are now transferring from a Ferrari Tractor to a luxury Ford escort, and he took that mindset with him.

So we believe it's set up too, Weber is now 3 and a quarter turns out instead of 4. Below is a photo of a new plug after 30 miles, I dunno if I can get it any better, we're leaving here on Monday for northwest Texas and beyond.

Watch this space for run reports.

The Harley's pretty much keeping up too, so right now it's a "Wonderful world"

So tomorrow it's "Amarillo by morning" and a trip to the "Cadillac ranch" on "Route 66".

"Wichita lineman" signing off! :Egyptian: "Walking like an Egyptian"

Amarillo TX. Another 240 miles today and we still haven't left Texas.

Found a whole lot more to look at in the Texas panhandle than just the obvious, that and the treat of really bad weather made us decide to stick around an extra day or so.

Got to meet some really awesome local people out on the real route 66, and went to Palo Duro canyon on their advice.

Great scenery. :good:

Santa Fe NM. Finally made it out of Texas & broke the 1000 mile barrier today, a psychological plus.

No new photo's this time but tomorrow we go to Taos and check out the eagles nest, so should come back with some good material.
