1978 GL1000 smoking bad from left pipe

Heavy dose of reality for me today. Smoking is back and as bad as ever, especially after I drove it for 5 miles. Let it cool and dropped the pipes, still lots of smoke straight out of exhaust ports. So lets assume it needs new rings, engine has 79K on it. Do I even mess with cracking the case...

1978 GL1000 smoking bad from left pipe

Some good news. I have been starting the bike and letting it run for 5 to 10 minutes each night. The smoke has definitely let up but not completely stopped. Also, I sprayed some carb cleaner around the intakes and definitely have some leaks. Also realized the air cutoff valve vacuum line was not...

1978 GL1000 smoking bad from left pipe

:crying:  So bad news here.. replaced the head and head gasket (OEM this time), made sure oil orifice o rings were both in place. Started bike up and it smoked as bad or worse than before, let it run 10 minutes and still did not let up. So guessing I have a ring issue. This is not...

1978 GL1000 smoking bad from left pipe

I did not use an OEM gasket, bought it off Ebay. Some say they are fine others say they are junk. Since I am not 100% sure it was the issue I would say it is unclear to me it failed. But process of elimination would tell me to use an OEM one this time. I am also going to use the spare head and...

1978 GL1000 smoking bad from left pipe

Sounds like good advice. I am ordering a OEM Honda head gasket, cleaning/inspecting replacement head and going to re-install it later this week. Won't forget the oil orifice o-rings this time. Hopefully this will do the trick, will only be out $50 if it does not. Here's hoping.... :beg:

1978 GL1000 smoking bad from left pipe

The one on the orifice was brittle, the other between it and the head gasket was missing completely. My bad. Someone suggested these missing would still not cause the issue I am seeing. Is your experience different?

1978 GL1000 smoking bad from left pipe

So I removed the left side head this evening. My hopes of reusing the head gasket were quickly dashed... Anyways below are some pics of the exhaust valves, combustion chambers, bores etc for further analysis. As you can see the #2 cylinder is showing lots of oil deposits and fresh oil in the...

1978 GL1000 smoking bad from left pipe

Thanks for all the feedback. I went for a longer ride today and the smoke is not letting up. I think I am going to pull the left head and check again for cracks, Bike just does not sound right on that side. I have a good head I can swap it with, will let you all know what I find out. Jack

1978 GL1000 smoking bad from left pipe

New plugs along with the head gasket. The left side plugs look almost too clean to me, maybe head gasket is leaking some coolant and maybe I have some oil in the exhaust? Compression results All cylinders have 148 to 151 psi.

Pic of plugs. Outer two plugs are from right side. Inner plugs from left side. Picked up the compression tester this morning, waiting for battery to charge then will post numbers.

1978 GL1000 smoking bad from left pipe

My thoughts too. Looks like Harbor has a compression tested that might work, not the best quality unit but will work in a pinch. Should have numbers back in the next few hours. Sounds like I should have around 150 psi at each cylinder, all plugs out, throttle wide open, fully charged battery...

1978 GL1000 smoking bad from left pipe

Umm... might have to check that  No easy way to make sure so I guess head comes off today. I know I replaced them on the 75 but not 100% positive on this bike. Possible I overlooked them. Would actually be great if that was the issue, beats the heck out of dealing with bad rings. Thanks...

1978 GL1000 smoking bad from left pipe

Are you referring to the small tube near the top of the head? Seems to me I did replace the o ring on it but honestly cannot remember. If I failed to replace it would it cause the issue I am having?

1978 GL1000 smoking bad from left pipe

Bike is a 1978 GL1000 with 78,000 miles , not the 75 with a sidecar I mentioned on prior posts. Bought the bike a month ago, seller said it had been sitting 5 years. He said he had just bought the bike himself, was driving to get emissions checked and that it "popped" and started blowing white...

1978 GL1000 smoking bad from left pipe

It continues to smoke, took it around the block today (my personal flying mile) and about a half a lap into it started smoking like a banshee. Didn't let up after three laps, seemed to run strong at speed but idle was rough. Looked like I was crop dusting the neighborhood :smilie_happy:

1978 GL1000 smoking bad from left pipe

Just finished replacing the left headgasket and timing belts on my GL1000. Starts up fine, no smoke but after a minute or so it smokes a LOT from left pipe. Definitely oil and not water vapor. Thinking a bad valve stem guide but looking for other opinions. Read that overfilling with oil might...
