Via the FB world of things, need some help with this aftermarket solenoid and the wiring. Either is fried or I need a different idea for the 85 GL1200. Battery is strong and good but it won’t spin over this brand new starter I just put in.

Can someone lend a hand or drop the info on what other solenoid to use? I heard the Ford ones help too?

First thing I’d do is by pass the solenoid and jump the starter with jumper cables from a car ..or something...with the key on ..it might start up ...plus it a sure test the solenoid is screwed ..8f things are hook up right ..I heard these after market solenoids are not that good ...
 
I recently replaced the bad solenoid on my 86 with one of those after market solenoids. I also purchased this plug. https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-HONDA-GL11 ... SwulxbdjER
If you need to have the color code to wire it correctly I can check to see which wires go where on mine as the plug wire colors didn't match those on the bike. But I'd take Joe's advise first check to make sure yours is good or bad.

Starter is fine - brand new and spins freely when connected; it’s likely the solenoid is either wired backwards versus the OE plug or it’s got other ignition wiring gremlins somewhere in the circuitry

Changed it up and went with a Solenoid from a 1983 F250 which is more of the “barrel” style rather than the monstrous one from a 1989. I’ll have it wired up today and will likely post a “How-To” later on. HOPEFULLY it’ll get my bike to spin over!!

I believe so - thinking about buying a new Neon coil and starting that process over so I’ve got a hotter spark than what I’ve got. I think I’ve got a fuel delivery problem now

You could eliminate a lot of guesswork by being methodical and establishing a few basic facts.

1) Getting fuel? Drain float bowls. Each should contain roughly the same amount of gas. If not, verify pump is delivering fuel to carbs.

2) Getting spark? Pull the plugs and connect each one and ground it to the case. Spin the motor and look for spark. If no spark, look for simple stuff before replacing coils. Hard to imagine both coil packs going out at the same time.

3) Check timing. Line up the T1 mark on the crank and verify cam gear marks line up. (You might have to spin the motor over if it's 180 out). This should be good, but needs to be verified. If way off, you may have done mechanical damage that is, in fact, impacting compression.

4) Run a compression check. Should be consistent across all four. Actual numbers are less interesting than gross divergences.

If I missed any detail on any one of these, I apologize. But, unless you've covered the basics, you should stop throwing parts at it blindly.

I agree. All the basic checks. Then go from there. :good:
 
I'll have to admit it Nate, I've never seen someone struggle so much with one bike. I feel for ya, & I'm still bettin you'll win! I've been waiting for a week for my rear shocks spring kit, and it looks like it will still be Tuesday or Wednesday for me. Keep swinging away at it! -Graves-

My guess still leans towards a compression issue. We shall see today as long as Amazon gets their ***** in gear and my stuff gets here!
