anyone know if the old 350's ran alright in this 100 heat,? its an early 70's twin.. cl, the one with low pipes. Im going to look at it this wknd. I'm from up north,, and now live in southern ok. It may even be a late sixties model idk,, don't know the price yet either

Ran mine 2 up out in the Mojave desert in the summer and it didn't seem to mind, these days with an air cooled I would run Rotella synthetic or synthetic blend just to be safe in hot weather...Didn't have synthetic in those days.

I had an air cooled '81 Suzuki GN400 that ran no matter the temp or distance and I rode that bike everywhere year round if that helps any!

You have a wet clutch, not sure about synthetic oil in an old bike. Sounds like a fun ride.
It will work fine, no friction modifiers in Rotella synthetic or synthetic blend., other synthetics I don't know it has to be diesel rated.

the one i had would blow head gaskets all the time .. i lived in fla at the time ... finally just gave up on it
Well, you probably made 'em out of cereal boxes! :smilie_happy:

Confused: I am not supposed to run synthetic in my 1100 wing because of the wet clutch. Diesel synthetics are different enough that wet clutches are OK? Why would synthetic diesel oils not add friction modifiers to make the product as slippery as possible for the good of the engine?

Mobil 1 synthetic is made for motorcycles but I've read doesn't play nice in wing motors. I do use it in my old kz though.

If I remember it has to do with the high cylinder pressures of the diesel engine maybe other factors too but no modifiers in diesel rated oil..The 5-40 5-30 weight can be a problem with some bikes, guys on the newer bikes seem to get away with it more but some will get oil shear that makes the clutch chatter and not be as smooth..I haven't looked around but if I were running a strait syntheic I would have to find at least a 10-30 or 40, expensive stuff to experiment with, The synthetic blend like the 10-30 can be a substitute and still get some synthetic attributes..There is also Rotella T1 which is a strait weight...gotta look into that ad see if there is positive feedback but I dont think it is synthetic, just a strait weight. Personally I use the CJ-4 rated Rotella or Delo brand 15-40, seems just fine.
I would say slabghost is right about the mobil1 not playing nice, not all oils do and it varies from bike to bike but synthetics in lower weights will shear and cause these clutch problems, sure it will protect the motor fine but it is the wet clutches we have to try and find a balance between protection and rideability.
If you don't want to experiment best solution is a heavy duty 15-40 CJ-4 rated motor oil...I need look into the T1 though, I love a strait weight oil.

I ran Mobil 1 in my 1100 once for about 2000 miles. Then I found this site and pulled it out. I used it initially to quiet the standard 1100 transmission clunk. It did quiet down the transmission but I was worried about the wet clutch when I pulled it.

Mobil 1 has so many different types/grades of synthetic it depends on what Mobil 1 you were running, there is mobil 1 motorcycle, Mobil1 diesel truck which both do not use friction modifiers.
Most places we visit we see 2 maybe 3 choices for Mobil 1 so if it were a car type oil then pulling it out was a good choice.
Best to spend some time researching synthetic oils if that is what you want to run. This link is for Mobil oils but has so much information in it, their different oils and grades many of which I have never seen on the wal mart shelf.
