I know a c5 system would be great but I can only afford a dyna s system.
I have run the green dyna coils for a long time now.
Any opinions on the dyna s as opposed to getting new points and condenser?
thanks, dave

I've been saving my change almost a year for the c5. If your bike runs. I'd keep saving.

That's why I have a part time job. Momma gets the pay check from the VA, my Navy Retirement, and my VA Disability checks. I get the part time job pay to play with.

That way it doesn't take too long to save up money.

check these stuff out ...always wanted to try there stuff....the resistor pack for 3ohm coils ...or the transistorized ignition for dual points .....this is all the options I see ...to weigh in along with dyna option https://sohc4shop.com/catalog/index.php? ... rers_id=12

I had it in my CB750K5.
Unfortunately I am not that sensitive so I couldn't feel any difference.
Maybe a bit of MPG improvement.
But the benefit is your points become almost maintenance free.

Just an opinion, I personally like keeping the old school bikes old school. Easy and simple to work on. With a little tweaking you can make these bikes run amazing on the points. I dig the points system but I also understand why people want to switch to electronic as well.

I too like the points ignition. If you want electronic though I suggest running the points and saving a bit more to get the c5. A little more costly but a much nicer set up entirely.

I don't mind points but lately down here condensers have become really expensive and in some cases the points as well. Long term I would be saving for a C5 as suggested.

I just ordered a set of points for my '76. Darn things cost $75 US for a set. Way cheaper than a Dyna S which can be just as problematic but unfortunatley little can be done with it on the roadside. Also considerably cheaper than a c5 for one who is not quite sure of the longevity of any one bike being in the garage....

New Dyna is $130. Carry the points, rotor, leave the condensers in their place and you won't be stranded for very long. Dyna beats the cost of quality points in two years. Set it and forget it. If you have a failed Dyna, send it in and they offer you new for cost, $76. C5 sounds promising, but reserved for a bike you intend to keep a while.

I have Hondaman's ignition box on my CB750 and GL1000. It enables you to retain points and have them not wear out. His ignition does not improve the spark, it only preserves the points. I put Dynatek coils on both bikes too and used a NAPA resistor (per Randakk suggestion) on the GL1000. An additional benefit of Hondaman's ignition is the ability to go back to a stock setup in a few minutes should the electronics ever fail. If a Dyna ignition fails, You're SOL.

Or, put points plate back in and in minutes, you're ready to go. I carry an extra plate and points and leave the condensers on the bike.

In minutes? With correct timing?

Yes. doesnt take too long to put the points plate back in. its a good idea to make a mark with a felt pen on the base plate and engine casing so it can be put back in some where near.
i have a C5 in my 75. a Dyna in the LTD i have on the road with stock coils. i have had 2 out of 3 Dynas fail. which is why i made the upgrade to the C5. best thing ever. i also carry the points plate ,just so i am not caught short again. M.

Timing the early models on the road would be quicker than the later because you have a kick-starter to turn it over. My 1200 with the 1000 ignition would be tougher and reminds me that I should put an offset wrench in to turn it if need be. I am hopeful the newer DynaS are more solid state than earlier versions. Looks like a different process to encase with plastic, but probably only as good as the soldered joints inside.

yes, my suggestion of marking the timing plate is just aimed at getting the bike running again if the dyna fails. just a quick fix to get you home . i had to limp home on two cylinders once ( not far ) but enough to make me look for a back up plan.
i think the newer Dyna design ( slimmer modules ) might be better than the old one. time will tell. but ,as i said , i have had two out of three fail.
ps
over 5000 klm's on the C5. all good so far. :moped:
