I'm ready to replace the front fork seals on an 86I. On other 1200s, I have released the springs and then had to fight the forks nuts back into place, what a hassle!!

The question is: can the front fork seals be changed without releasing the springs? If so, how do you get the 10.4 ounces of Dextron III back into the forks?

I elected to not release the springs. Replacing the fork seals was fairly simple because I had the fork replacement tool.

To fill the forks with Dextron-III, I removed the 6mm drain bolt from the TRAC unit, screwed in a vacuum fitting, and used a hand vacuum pump to suck the oil back into the forks.

I cleaned the carburetors thoroughly with an ultra-sonic cleaner and checked the operation of the slides, didn't see a problem there.

Now to figure out why the motor hesitates going from an idle to full throttle. If there is a transition circuit in the carburetors, it's not working correctly. The amount of hesitation does decrease as the motor warms up.

I synchronized the carburetors and that helped, but the hesitation is still there. I'm running non-alcoholic gasoline with 4 ounces of Dextron-III in the tank. Maybe just driving it will correct the problem.
