Howdy and thanks in advance for any input i may receive
i just got me a 1983 Aspencade pd 720 for it i got it home and started it up oil went everywhere (out of exhaust mostly left side) i shut it off and started investigateing it seemed to have real bad gas odor in oil i drained it and refilled w\castrol 20/w50 took it for a ride it was dark but when the sherrif was passing with my 05 tag well lit i could hardly see him through cloud of smoke
my theory is it got fluid in cylinder and hydraulic pressure damaged head gasket or piston
it is showing 72k but i dont know if it is right any adivce is welcome

couple ideas for you...
if it has set for a very long time the rings might be stuck... it will make it smoke quite a bit, but usually they will free up after a short time..
now if the gas in the oil caused the rings to wash out, you may need to re-ring the old girl..
you should be able to determine either of these conditions with a compression test.

if the compression test comes back close...
another idea for you may be an over fueling problem... if one of the carbs is stuck it'll dump fuel into one cylinder causing alot of smoke, and usually a fowling plug.
usually with that amount of smoke and oil, you would be fowling plugs pretty quickly.
or a constant miss. if its missing on one cylinder eventually it will pull oil up into and out threw pipe.

hows the plugs all look? make sure to check the spark on all plugs... bet you will find the offending cylinder right away.
it could be a blown head gasket, as there is oil return, and oil pressure passages across the gasket.
could be many other things too.
need to start looking.

BTW.
welcome to CGW
hang around we can figure it out.

:hi:welcome mblackm1 you now have a plan which should lead you to the problem (if there is one )or you should be able to oburve the symtems to insure no major problrms and ride it untill it gets better... some times what looks like a problem may only be absence of use...CHECK CLOSLEY AND THOURALLY brfore making a decission.... use ATF or seafoam in the gas and oil to help clean the internal parts......also if it has set for a long time frain the gas and put in new... check fule filter fir plugging check fule petcock for leakage......Good luck Bob

Thanks for all the comments i was irresponsible to start it up w/o even knowing how to check the oil much less ride it my enthusiasm got the best of me i will take advise i have read so far and report my progress i am glad i rode it so i know what i have to look forward to i work some outragious schedules so may be slow to post but will be reading and studying on the problem between sessions
this is my second bike the other is a 79 shovel would be cool to have them both up and running
thanks again for all your ideas

Sitting on a side stand these bikes tend to collect oil on the left side..seeps past the rings, could be valve seals, and or gas flooded from bad float needles or float seat..at a minimum... pull and rebuild carbs, clean the gas tank, change timing belts, set valves, drain a quart of oil add some diesel run it for 100 miles easy and drain and replace with new oil and filter will clean out the bottom end a bit.

ok i am so stoked right now i was away for a few days i left bike up on center stand while i was away for work i checked oil level and found antifreeze bottle and it had liquid in it i don't have a lot of time i figure to start it for a second to see how the smoke is and it is almost gone very little smoke at all it is idling almost smooth i dont have time tonight to do more but am thinking the side stand syndrome and leaky carbs may have just fouled the exhaust i will try to post pics

i have two request for input

1 i have an electronic instrument cluster and the speedo and tach are blank any recomendation on where to look would be killer

#2, it has air ride suspension it is like 27 years old what have you guys been getting into as far as repairs

finally i will try to post pics this weekend to get your evaluation

thanks again for all your support
