Hi all, this one is a bit of an anorak question I'm afraid.

I have a very nice original GL1000 but the rear final drive casing is shabby and defies all attempts to clean it.

The original paint finish is quite unusual, neither silver nor grey but somewhere between the two....I would rather leave alone than get it wrong, but if there is a good match I will re paint it.

Has anyone found a match for this finish, ideally available in the UK?

Welcome from North TEXAS DFW area.... first of all... Now to the drive unit... have you gotten the finish smoothed out? ... brushed aluminium would most likely be the nearer color...

Hmm.........I was hoping it wouldn't be Duplicolor 1615........unobtainable in the UK, and no one wants to ship aerosols.

I bought some in Florida a few years back but couldn't send it home....it's probably still in my mate's garage.

Are you saying that the finish on the cast final drive unit is the same paint used on the crankcases?

Yes it is!

Well, thank you for that, at least I know......problem is I don't know of any paint readily available in the UK that is a perfect match.

Good to know all the same.

I use Rust-oleum High heat gas & oil resistant part number: 248904 flat aluminum, for my engines and final drive, the color is a great match, and with the gas and oil resistant, it's easy to clean. You can find this almost anywhere, Lowes, Home depot, wal-mart, ect.

Hi All, thanks for the advice and the welcome; I think I will probably leave it alone unless I can find some paint in the UK that is a perfect match......it's a real drag knowing that Duplicolor 1615 would do the job but being unable to buy it.

Here are a couple of pictures of the bike as she arrived.......I really wanted a K0/K1 as that was what I had back in the day, but I couldn't resist the condition of this one, even the wheel rims and spokes still have their original finish; if it had been a UK bike it's highly unlikely it would have survived like this since 1977, but it has every chance of staying this way now.

There are going to be a couple of minor changes....the handlebars are getting swapped for a set of 75/76 bars which are a couple of inches lower and it's getting an early style original seat, apart from that I couldn't be happier with it.

That thing looks like it is STILL brand NEW! Gorgeous bike! :clapping: :good:
Welcome to the CGW Forums! :hi:

Every time I see a picture of a 77 it makes me want one more!

Funny thing is.....that's exactly how I feel about the K0/K1 bikes, which is why this one will get just a couple of easily reversible tweaks to make it look like a K1

Thanks for the positive comments, it is a peachy bike and I like it, but it does no harm to see that other people like it.
