we were looking into why my niece's 1100 nekked wing was having electrical problems and found a burnt up wiring harness caused by the po wrapping a fuse in aluminum foil. the harness is to far gone to be saved so can the harness from an '82 interstate be used on a '82 standard wing

I have heard folks using those little fork mounted leather tool bags to stuff the extra wire when they make an interstate naked so I would guess its a PITA to convert but maybe they are just not motivated.
There are some on the auction site that are not described as interstate or aspencade just gl1100 so maybe if a standard harness could be identified by sight you could land one there. I know there are extra wires I just cant tell one from the other.
Good luck with the project.

William, I haven't done it but I know it is done. You just need to know what you are removing from the harness and you also have to make the decision of how you want to remove it: hack at any spot or snip at the source and re-wrap.

If four or more wires are fried it might be best to replace the harness. If you can identify which wires are affected you can disconnect and abandon them and just run new wires.

I checked the part number at a parts site and both the Interstate and Standard have the same main harness part number.
So you can swap it out with a known good one.
