GL1200s are a negative ground system. Watching the video, it looks like you are connecting the positive wire to the frame of the starter and the negative to the starter post. Am I wrong?
Good catch. Reversed polarity would spin starter backward.

Good catch indeed (took a few more views to catch the potential polarity change), also the starter has to turn CCW to turn the starter chain CW. Everything from an orienting perspective. Shan't forget this one.

Watched the vid 4 times.Starter is indeed turning backwards and the jumpers are indeed reversed in polarity.

Yes. I watched a video and got confused about which way the chain is supposed to move. I figured since when i turn thr crank counterclockwise the chain and starter move thats the way it should spin. But ive been told that is wrong. So when i hook it up right the starter motor spins but the chain and the starter clutch does not spin.

Yeah has to be a problem with the planetary gears in the reduction head. Stripped, loose fitting, armature shaft splines are messed up, bad bearing...something along those lines.
Clearly the clutch is working.

Heres a video of my issue as of now.

I just re-watched the video and saw you pull the chain and spin the starter. That starter should not be able to turn that easily. It may be in your best interest to get a known 1200 starter that works correctly first.

+1 on the right starter.
In most cases reverse polarity won't make a starter run backwards as normally the windings are direction oriented. Some reduction starters just have a standard motor that can be reversed but they are the exception not the rule.

Ok. So i took the cap off the old starter and looked at it. Putnit back together and now the damn thing works. Lol. All that for nothin. So i apologize to you all but you did help me a great deal and i learned alot bout these old goldwings. So i got the engine in and got it started. Heres a video of my new problem. Got some ticking and a knock. Hoping i dont need a new engine.

Motor actually sounds pretty good for running on really out of balance carbs. Sounds like they need a good cleaning and some adjustment.

Ok. So how would.i go about getting rid of that knock and ticking? I did put some mmo in the gas and the oil. Right now the oil is not the 10w40 recommended in the manuel but 20w50. Its all inhad around the house and just wanted to get something in it to see if it would start. Plan on changing rhe oil soon to 10w40.

Sounds to me like a collapsed hydro valve adjuster. I'd change to 10/30 or maybe better, replace a 1/2 qt with automatic trans fluid. ATF will also help clean things up inside. Run that mix easy for a hundred miles or so then change to 10/30.

Ok i cant really ride it. It barely stays started without choke. When i go to hit the throttle it just dies. Carbs def need adjusted. Smokes like crazy. Im hoping thats just all that crap burning ofd in there.

I think in the end you will find the carbs need removed and cleaned. My 1200 carbs choke (enricheners) stick. Sounds much the same at start. Mine will be coming off for cleaning soon too I think.

So the carbs being dirty and all that would cause a knock sound? I know it has sat for long time. And i know carbs need cleaned and adjusted and the oil needs to be changed but all that would cause a knock sound?

well it does have horrible knock to it ..im hoping it stuck hydro lash adjuster ...along with carbs and all ..it dont sound to healthy ..but as montioned it been sitting and that turns stock carbs to crap
