Checked the stator bolt and its snug. I forgot to check the valve clearances , so will do that then re-sync. hopefully that will cure it

Sounded more like a rubbing noise than a rattle to me. Otherwise it sounds really good. Nice mellow tone.

I like the look of those pipes, nice tidy installation. The funny noises seem related to valve train...and maybe synch. My bike has a noisey valve train too. But, in spite of the poor speaker on this tablet it sounds a bit like a gear or chain whine. So to those who know these motors better than me what is there that could make that kind of noise?

I wonder if the starter clutch rollers could make a similar noise back there. I don't think so because spinning force should throw them outward to their home position.
Besides what's already been mentioned I'm out of ideas for now.

does the noise smooth out when you throttle up ....could be the primary chain noise .....

No, noise is still there after throttling up

well next stepis to adjust valves and get themright and see what that dose ...and go from there

Will do. I did adjust the clutch cable today, seems she wasn't shifting as easily as previous Wanderer and now that's better.

I just re read this thread and you make no mention of changing the oil. With the carbs leaking before there may be gas in the oil. Maybe fresh oil will cure the noise?

I already changed the oil.
What's also interesting is that I don't recall it making this sound before I rebuilt the carbs but maybe that was the case since the pipes were so loud.

I'm going to try the Seafoam treatment. 1/2 bottle of seafoam added to the oil, run it for a bit then another oil change. Trying the easy stuff first. :beg:

Be sure you follow the directions exactly. I prefer to add ATF to my oil to clean things up. I use 1/5th oil capacity of ATF. So five quarts capacity I have one qt ATF and four qt oil.

+1 :good:

Is 3 1/2 quarts the correct oil capacity for a complete oil change including new filter? For a 1980 Gl1100 that is.
Still waiting on Clymer manual.

That info is in the gallery under original owners manuals.
