The live cd's are great for test driving Linux!
please explain this...

~O~
Many of the Linux distrobutions can be burned to a DVD and booted from it without installing anything on any of your hard drives.

https://www.ubuntu.com/
Click on "Ubuntu Desktop" , choose your system 32 bit or 64 bit (I think it recognizes your system and auto selects) then on the screen that asks you to pay using paypal, scroll down the page and click on 'Not now, take me to the download', then you'll be asked where to save the .iso.
You then burn this iso file to a DVD and boot from it.

Keep in mind running from a disk like this is NOT the same as when it's installed to a hard drive.
DVD drives are very slow so be patient and let it boot.
You might have to make some selections during startup like language and time zone, stuff like that.

For that matter, anyone who'd like to try Linux I'd send a live disk.

Tell ya what, send me one and I'll make a donation to the forums in your name. Deal? If so I'll pm Addy after work.

Sure can. PM me what I need to get it to you and I'll send it out Monday.
Bill

I'm on Ubuntu booted from a DVD right now.
Took about 5 minutes to boot this way, installed on a hard drive is very fast.

I'd post a picture but I don't want to ruin it for anyone wanting to try it out.

Dan,is ubuntu linux based?or is it its own thing?
I don't know a lot about the builds out there, but there are many.
I believe theses "Distros" are all built on top of the base Linux core, each with their own user interface look and feel.
Ubuntu seems to be the most popular and refined.

I had been running 7 pro and nothing but problems and continual upgrades. Went to 8.1 and love it. However I do know some of the old software has problems on 7 and 8.1. My desktop runs much faster on 8.1 than 7, I also upgraded to Adobe Lightroom now that is an awesome photo editing program.
