Reading a lot of forum threads regarding the ’85 Limited Edition and ’86 SE-i fuel injected Gold Wings. These are, in my opinion, sought after by many. The CFI – Honda’s fuel injection system is state of the art even by today’s standards. Lots of forum threads lamenting the older carb models and the carbs.

Many new owners dive right in and start to work on and maintain these fuel injected models without having the requisite service manuals. There fuel injected models are not the same as the carb cousins.

There are three manuals required. The OEM service manual – generic for all 1200s, Electrical Troubleshooting manual – for all 1200s, and most importantly, the Service Manual Supplement – commonly called and shortened to the Supplement.

Common misconception is that when an engine operating issue occurs, the CFI system is the culprit. Totally and completely wrong. If there are no ECU error codes generated, look elsewhere.

These fuel injected models are long in the tooth, and parts are becoming scarce, but so are parts for the carb models.

Lots of maintenance to do when you become the owner of these GWs.

Without going into a long rant about the pros/cons of these fuel injected models, the first order of business when you become the owner of one of these, is to get the manuals, do a lot of reading then ask questions.

Just a few thoughts on this issue.
