    1985 GL1200 Limited ECU Replacement/Upgrade - Part 2

Progress with the new sensors. Have made brackets and installed the Hall effect sensors on the engine. Use the OEM 8 tooth crank trigger wheel. Can use the camshaft cover without a spacer. New timing pointer installed, engine timed quite nicely at 188 degrees. Started and stayed idling...

    1985 GL1200 Limited ECU Replacement/Upgrade - Part 2

Wiring update. Still using the OEM wiring harness to connect all the components. Keeps extra wiring to a minimum. Have a wiring project I will do for the accessories I have added and will use the spare wiring harness wires for the new harness. Like to have the various colour coded wires...

    1985 GL1200 Limited ECU Replacement/Upgrade - Part 2

Initially thought there was an issue with the OEM trigger wheel so went with the 36-1 crank trigger wheel and no cam signal. Learned quite a bit in the past year, and with research and a better understanding of the FI system components, realize it was the cam VR sensor. A new VR sensor might...

    1985 GL1200 Limited ECU Replacement/Upgrade - Part 2

Here are the traces: Cam trigger wheel at 3100 RPM: Crank OEM 8 tooth trigger wheel - 1100 RPM - with hall sensor: Crank OEM 8 tooth trigger wheel - 3100 RPM - with hall sensor: Think there is a bit of "flyback". There is a trigger filter in the tuning software that should compensate for...

    1985 GL1200 Limited ECU Replacement/Upgrade - Part 2

Today was template day. I have made the brackets and installed the cam and crank Hall effect sensors on the test engine, looks good. I made an engine timing pointer and installed, as well as marking the OEM trigger wheel with what I hope are good degree marks, really only need #1 TDC position...

    1985 GL1200 Limited ECU Replacement/Upgrade - Part 2

Have some time to get the new sensors installed and switch back to the 8 tooth trigger wheel. Broken main spring on garage door, won't go up. New door on order. Think that the door and parts/pieces should last longer than 25 or so years. Can raise the door with the bike lift when I get the...

    1985 GL1200 Limited ECU Replacement/Upgrade - Part 2

Checked the 36-1 crank trigger wheel as well. The oscilloscope trace is not as clean. I like and prefer the trace from the OEM 8 tooth trigger wheel with the Hall Effect sensor. These pics are the 36-1 trigger wheel. The first is at 1100 RPM and second at 3100 RPM: Went looking for the...

    1985 GL1200 Limited ECU Replacement/Upgrade - Part 2

Back at the testing. Received the DC power supply from Amazon. Used it today to bench test the Cherry GS100701 Hall effect sensors with the OEM single tooth cam trigger wheel, and the OEM 8 tooth crank trigger wheel. Drill press RPM used was 1100 and 3100. Understand why the Hall Effect sensors...

Got a coffee cup warmer for my b'day. Have it sitting on the desk beside my computer. Keeps the coffee hot, good to the last drop. As coffee cools, most do not want to keep drinking it, myself included. I keep the warmer temp at 170. Works a treat.

    1985 GL1200 Limited ECU Replacement/Upgrade - Part 2

Back from my sister's wedding and time to get their project moving again. This next trial period is going to be addressing the MAP issue. Don't know where I am going with this, but have to get the MAP reading down a bit to around 30-40 kPa. Having the engine load at idle in the 60-70 kPa...

Back from my sister's wedding in Ontario. Good trip, saw some new areas. Weather was good. For the ride back, bought a plug in cooler. Worked well. Handle is a bit dodgy, plastic and not too sturdy - had to be gentle. Allowed us to have in car snacks along the way. Kept eating costs...

Help with 1985 GL1200 Limited Edition

The side mirrors are manual. There is an internal spring that you can adjust the tension of to keep the mirrors in place. If your mirrors are set for you, I'd leave alone. When the internal spring assembly is loose, the mirrors move out of adjustment. When this occurs you have to try and...

Help with 1985 GL1200 Limited Edition

Travel Computer - always on. Drain is minimal. If concerned, connect a battery tender. To turn it off, need to disconnect the two white connectors. If you do this, to use travel computer, you will have to connect each time you want to use TC, and reset clock each time as well. This FI model...

Help with 1985 GL1200 Limited Edition

Great looking bike, has a place in my heart. Don't listen to those other naysayers, it is the best first Gold Wing:cool:😁. You need the OEM service manual, Electrical troubleshooting manual and the most important Supplement - three manuals. If you do not get these, especially the electrical...

Thanks for the reply. Checked the "oracle" (google) again and you're spot on. Will have to check the MAP sensor and do some investigating.
