    GL1100 final drive

As the project continues and plans change, I wanted to strip the final drive down to clean it up and get the casing powder coated. I have managed to source most of the o rings and oil seals, which has been a challenge in itself, but then the haynes manual suggests that it is not really a diy...

    Loctite

Hi there, Is it best on an engine rebuild to just torque the bolts etc with maybe a dab of grease on them, or do you use loctite or an equivalent product. Also when I removed the stator coils, the bolts seemed to be coated in some sort of plastic product! Any ideas? Jon

    The project continues

Hi there again and I have got the engine in half and steadily cleaning all the old gasket compound off the mating surfaces that a previous owner must have got in bulk! As I have said before, it has been interesting so far, but I have found bolts missing as well as o-rings, and rubber goo running...

    Another obsolete part.

Just getting to the point where the two engine halves are going to come apart! Made a list of o-rings, oil seals, gaskets etc needed for the rebuild, but the latest part that is proving hard to get, is the grommit for the scavenger pump, no. 15239-463-000. Most sites are listing this as 'no...

    Gasket set

Hi there, this is mainly aimed at UK/Euro members, but any advice would be appreciated. Can anyone recommend a full gasket set for a 1980 GL1100? I read a couple of dealers say the quality of Athena sets are fine, but then I read another site saying the opposite! I was hoping to use the set for...

    GL1100 battery leads

Just another quickie, as I take bits off the engine, I find all sorts of things. Someone in the past chose to put gasket compound as well as o rings on the mating surfaces, sure you all know what fun that is to clean off! The neutral switch was missing the o ring, but there was a lot of rubber...

    Air filter box gasket

Hi everyone, I have been trying to obtain the gasket, part no.17219-463-300, for the air filter box for my GL1100 but as with a lot of parts, it is now obsolete! Does anyone know where I might get one, or do you know what else may be used instead? Hear from you soon, Jon

    GL1100 water pump

After sorting out the problem with the carbs, I have now started to take the engine out. Not sure how well this project is going to go, but already finding strange things! The nuts holding the exhaust on at the engine, are different sizes, same thread, but different socket to undo, although one...

    Start of project

I have finally made a start on getting my bike firing on four cylinders, before I strip her down! Here is a recap of the story so far. NO. 3 Cylinder not firing, you can quite happily touch exhaust for that cylinder, there is a spark, Compression test seems ok, Took carbs off and stripped down...

    Handlebar guard

Today I managed to buy one handlebar guard, no 53167-463-000, but they are like hen's teeth, rocking horse poo, etc. Anyone know where I can get another? Hear from you soon, Cheers Jon

    Choke cable

Hi there, can anyone please help me with information on the route of the choke cable on a GL1100? I think my current one is a 'mod' as the knob is fitted just above no. 4 carb, and the cable which is about 12'' long simply passes along the back of the carbs to the lever. I want to replace it...

    Randakks postage to UK

Hi there again, going to bite the bullet and buy the carb kit for my GL1100 from Randakks, but not sure why they can't just send it in the post direct to my address. Can anyone explain why it has to go through a US-based freight forwarder, and if there are alternatives. Not trying to break US...

    GL1100 Carbs

Hi there, got a 1980 GL1100 as a project, had to delay start due to house extension, but have an initial problem. It only fires on three cylinders! I have swapped sparkplugs, and I know there is a spark going to the dodgy cylinder, so I suspect there may be a problem with the carb serving that...

    Hi there

Hi there, from good old Blighty! Had a 1982 GL1100c from new until it had to go when I bought my first house, big mistake, then had various bikes until 1991 when a dog ran out in front of me on Christmas Eve. 19 years and two divorces later, I bought a new naked CB1300 last year which is great...
