This is a neat vision put together by GM for the 1956 Motorama exhibit. It is a vison of what cars and traffic will be like in 1976! :hihihi: What is interesting is the routing by the "air traffic control" for turbine cars showing routing very similar to today's GPS. Also, the dashboard is actual a computer screen read out of the turbine function (no computers in existence or even thought of at that time!).

Perhaps cheesy by today's standards, but what an imagination for the 1950's!

Go back and watch some of the sci fi of the time. Some of the tech they imagined we still don't have.

How about the GM Firebird III concept turbine car!

*ABS braking
*Sonic remote key for entry and starting
*Joystick control for driving
*Onboard control computer

A lot of items that have taken more than 30 years or more to become reality in today's vehicles.

I read many years ago the reason the turbine was abandoned in cars was too much heat from the exhaust.

Jay Leno has told the story of his turbine powered bike. He was sitting at a stop light, and some turd kept inching up on him from behind. By the time the light changed, the front bumper on the idjit's car behind him was melted, and dripping on the ground.... :smilie_happy:

New tech is always far behind the curve when it comes to imagination. There's more power in a cell phone today than the entire Apollo space program had available when they went to the moon. The dreams of a grandfather are often the playthings of his grandkids.
Remember the Dick Tracy wrist phone? A reality now.
But.....we STILL can't get an accurate friggin weather forecast...or the correct order at the drive-thru.... :Awe:

I`m still waiting for that underwater city to be built, I read about it in popular mechanics , Dad had a collection from the `50`s and `60`s I used to read through..Man I loved reading those old magazines.
