Ruth's Forester had a problem with its Center differential which as it failed was causing it to lock the front and rear wheels. Anyone who has driven a 4wd on hard surfaces would have experienced the front and rear fighting as you try to turn. The part was $1400 aud from my local Subaru dealer, luckily this same part was available from an online dealership (https://subarupartsdepot.com ) in the states that supplied and delivered it here for $600 aud ($473 usd ). Unfortunately I was having problems with my hoist and it took me ages to fix it, I had to find a half link for the chain to shorten it and managed to get some new tensioner and running blocks. It turned out that the slave lift must of been jammed on the way down and was now out of alignment. I placed the bucket of the tractor on the arm and was then able to wind the screw and get the lock/running nut into it's correct position again. I then had to unbolt and lift the master and slave units to get the chain installed back on the sprockets which finally all came together.

I don't think that it has sounded this good in ages and I was really pleased to hear it sound the same loaded with the Forester as it did unloaded

Today was Fathers Day and I finally got the chance to finish up the center diff replacement which I wanted to get done on Friday but unfortunately I got called away to a job.
Parts removed for access
The offending component
Where the new one lives inside the gearbox extension housing.
To drain the last of the gearbox oil I had to borrow a T70 torx bit that was so tight it would not undo with the air rattle gun and I ended up using the breaker bar with a meter of pipe on it.
The best part is I now have a happy wife who isn't asking when can I have my car back :yahoo:

Good job now stop by and fix my Legacy. For no apparent reason it decides to turn right on it's own.
