I have a new to me 79 gl1000, it came with a single carb conversion with a 34PICT-3 carb. It has a nice welded aluminum manifold. Ist runs well above idle, but won't idle at all. Is there a procedure for adjusting it? I am new to these conversions and carbs. It also has accel coils installed.

There isn't any wire on your idle solenoid ( bottom photo). Ignition feed is required. It is sometimes called an anti dieseling solenoid.

I had the wires off to make a new harness, there were 3 sizes of wire and several connectors on them. I did set the 2 adjustments to 2 1/2 turns out, it is idling better now. I will play with the adjustments tomorrow. they were both set about 3/4 to 1 turn out.

Thanks for catching the wires though, all advice is welcome!

The anti-dieseling solenoid does not effect the idle circuitry of the carb

hmmm have no experience with 34PICT carb ... but it might be lacking air at idle causing this problem ... dft 32-34 certainly dose lack air to idle good ... and had to be modified to get more air without adding gas along with it

Would that mean changing jets? I have no idea what jets are in there, the PO did the conversion.

When I was experimenting with the single carb mod I've started with the 34PICT. I found an excellent guide for setup and tune. Check this: https://www.vw-resource.com/34pict3.html

The 34PICT is an easy carb to work with it. In that webpage you will find information about the jets and other stuff. You will need to read, read,read.... :read:

I also never had much luck with a 34pict3 carb, to be fair the carb i tried to use was a empi brand and i was told by the VW gang that only about half of that brand work's like they should. The one i bought new never did idle correct no matter what i did and i read all i could on that thing! I have read a bunch of folks have used them with great outcomes! I think most of the happy folks have a solex brand carb, not the mexican or china copies. as you read here, a number of us run a single carb and would never go any other direction. Good Luck and Have Fun!! P.S. if you dont hook up the 12 volt fuel shut off, i think you can remove it and plug the hole, i read that someplace

Thank you brother Joe. :eek:k:

Almost forgot, about the solenoid: some people remove the solenoid, cut the plunger and install back. If the PO cut the plunger then there's no need to connect to the ignition. BUT if the plunger is intact then you'll need to connect 12V from the ignition in order keep the engine idle. In the VW's that solenoid cuts the gas when the car is turned off.

... That is what i read about that Jungo!! some day's the little light just don't come on...

Thanks for the info fellas. I think the carb I have is the Chinese version, where on the carb would the manufacturer name be? Is runs OK, It seems to need to be adjusted at the least. I will use the procedure from the suggested page to start with.

it is usually on the bowl area. some of the barsol(mexican) brand(that may not be correct spelling) isn't marked, same with empi. however all the solex carbs i have seen say solex or VW. If it runs good, just play with the adj like you have read and ride that baby!
