83 GL1100A my first wing bought in April it had sat inside for 5 years 32k on it and is in very nice shape. It came back well runs very good I have done a complete tune with carb. sync., valve adj. and timing belts all as well as fluids changed, even rechecked all work, everything is right on and have put about 250 miles on it
My problem is this when starting from a stop in first gear there is a loud grinding rattle noise. When at an idle in neutral no noise, sounds normal even with quick throttle increase
Now after reading many posts on this site and others about primary chain noise I do hear that when lugging it is not that it's a lot louder then that but it will not happen with higher RPM's and clutch slipping on starting to roll, clutch works normal no slip, grab or chatter will not make the noise shifting gears or under heavy acceleration.
So anyone got any ideas or had problems with ? primary driven gear dampers ? output shaft damper spring ? clutch damper plate ? clutch lifter plate or release bearing ? is there a sheet metal cage around the primary driven gear side of the primary chain on the 1100 I found a pic of an 1000 that had one ? could the chain hit that or the tensioner some how ? has anyone found any 83 recall info for this ? 32k never towed trailer adult owned (old owner and wife were 300lbs total rider weight together) well taken care of with a noise that sounds like trany is going to blow through the side.

Welcome to the CGW forums, justwingenit!!! :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:
Someone with more knowledge will be along shorty to help with the noise question!

Welcome to the site from New Jersey! :clapping:

Two things, what is your idle speed? And have you syncronized the carbs yet?

If the idle is below 950 RPM, the primary chain will slap a touch if there is not enough throttle applied. If the carbs are not synced, the primary chain will slap a lot at low speed because the carbs are out of balance.

I have an '83 engine on my '82 with '81 carbs and the idle is set at 1050 for best all around performance between idling at stop lights, (idling with the fan on at stop lights!) easy pull away with no chatter and the stator keeps volts above 12.

Welcome to the forums.

Check the stator nut. If it's loose you'll get a noise similar to what you describe.

Carbs out of sync or one carb with even partially clogged idle jets will produce a knocking noise at lower rpms.

Adjusting the idle mixture screws (pilot jets) and doing a good sync can make a huge difference in cold start, idle smoothness, and reduce vibrations.

welcome to CGW .....83 is a nice year bike you will love it im sure :eek:k: :good:

put it second gear and take off in that gear and see if it makes the noise .....if it dosent then it could be first gear .....im hoping its not the tranny ....the noise may change some in second but you sould be able to tell if its the same thing.....if it is first gear i would quit useing it till you can figure out whats going on .....if your bike is running good it sould be no problem for a while you wouldnt want to trash the whole tranny.....

I was having a similar problem on my 83 and found the plug gaps to be too close. re-gapping the plugs to around .035 took care of most of it. I finally figured the noise was so severe due to one cylinder missing on low rpm takeoffs. After thinking about it it made sense.
I am now waiting on new wires and am putting in iridium plugs when I get the wires.

I feel like that will take care of the rest of the problem, I'll let you know.

Hi all
A few answers first Dan
Went out and put a wrench on stator bolt could not put a torque wrench on it but in gear with the front wheel against the garage in gear and girl friend holding front and rear brakes must of pulled at least 50-60 ft lbs on it manual said 63 ft lbs so got to say it was not loose and yes noise is still there.
joedrum
did not try second gear if RPMs are around 2000 no noise but onlookers have weird looks on faces waiting for the burnout or wheelie's to begin. but I don't think it's in the gears.
Ross
manual said .031-.035 I set them at .033 but I did find a plug wire loose on the cap so I cut 1/4 inch off and reattached now I think I will remove wires and read the resistance with my DOVM
I have seen 1 ohm caps read 3-4 ohms and who knows what 27 year old wires will read
you might be on to something there and let me know I hope it works out for you.
Well thanks to everyone for the input

Could be clutch chatter. Mine makes a squeal as I take off when it has sat for the night or so. I read here, NGW and at the Saunders site. I have seen it mentioned several times and some even joke that it is a pissed off squirrel. If that is what you are hearing, I would not worry about it.

Ijust did the valve timing and carbs on both my wings get those both spot on and the RPMs at 950 ish abd the chain rattle goes away .

I have sorted out a couple noises upon take off.

1) A squeeling type chatter that eventually turned up as a clucth dampener that lost a rivet.New dampener and clucth job took care of it,but not before a lack of disengaging one day in the driveway.

2) A clucth chatter type noise that is still there. This I believe is primary chain noise.Although much more suttle, and livable after a carb sync.

Hi all
First I would just like to say THANKS to all that replied your suggestions and ideas were a big help.
Next I want to apologize I got to thinking what these guys got carbs and valves on the brain and how can a primary drive make that much noise if it is not hitting something. Well short answer is it sure can make a noise that sounds just like striped gears in a coffee can put through the rolling stones sound system lol.
Well first I read the wires could not believe 27 year old wires and caps were like new .02 ohms on the wires and 5k-5.2k on the caps.
So off came the carbs (OH BIG TIP HERE) remove air filter box first makes throttle cables possible to remove then remove left side forward coolant tube 6mm bolt, move carbs half way out the left side then remove #3 C.V. cap and piston with a little wiggling and moving left side manifold runners towards the rear of bike they come out without a lot of cursing lol.
What I found was #3 idle jet about half clogged but what was most of problem was gummy deposits in C.V caps and on throttle pistons, so I removed float valves and those stupid little filters, cleaned jets and air bleeds cleaned C.V caps and throttle pistons reassembled synced carbs AGAIN.

NOW crisp quick throttle response and noise is gone THAT'S RIGHT gone slight buzz sound when starting off and with just a little throttle 1500-1700 no noise at all and 60 to 80 very surprising for a 700+ lbs bike, fires right up cold and idles 980 holds 13 volts with headlight on (ya I put a switch in as well as a input for mp3 or cd player got to know the clarion 2 system to well lol)
Well gonna go for a ride 80 and sunny
Thanks again all this forum rules
Russ

Had to take the carbs out of the 82 yesterday and found out you dont have to take the piston covers off to get um out goes in and out as if you did take um off .Dont like the little screens but they are there for a reason .
