I'd like to add, somehow, the ability to charge my laptop and smart phone whilst riding. Prob'ly mounted in the trunk. If I'm on the road for a few days, both devices will need recharging. The current draw, I'm fairly sure, is minimal, so no worries there...

:beg: Any thoughts on this? Anyone done it? I should think it can't be all that difficult; I can run 12V right off the battery up to the trunk (w/disconnects) and then to whatever converters are required.

I bow to the creative minds of the group...............

Be well-
John

I would do one of these in the trunk wired directly to the battery posts with a 15 amp fuse.

Dan, am I correct in assuming there is no aux circuit on his bike? And also, should he mount the fuse as close to the battery as possible?
Thanks,
Kenny

I charge my cell phone and Kindle with the cigarette outlet in the fairing and a USB charging adapter. I recently found, on Amazon, some 10 ft USB cords which are more than long enough to get from a cigarette outlet in the fairing to the trunk for charging a devise.

Personally going at it from a fresh start or do over, I'd put a second fuse block somewhere with a direct connect to the battery. This way connections to the battery posts don't turn into a spider web.

Kenny-
I want to be able to lock up my laptop and smart phone. I want, also, a dedicated line for this in the trunk.
Ky, I hear you. I was just wondering if you would be able to tap an aux circuit and run to your trunk. If you run a new circuit, I would mount the fuse close to the battery and then run the long run to your trunk.
I wasn't thinking that you were trying to "Text while Riding" like everybody else. :music:

+1 to that!

Brian and Dan- good ideas.
I can put a secondary fuse block under the seat and run a line into the trunk to the 12VDC power outlet and then to two USB connections for my phone/laptop. I can fabricate padded mounts for both and I'll be golden..... :music: Thanks!

John

Dan, I installed that setup on my 85.. put it on the left pocket hard cover... pics later.. leaves lighter plug available.. and allows for 2 usb outlets. Tying into the aux tap would not allow for enough current.. aux is fused at 5 amps and is a keyed system key must be on to power it. Aux fuse block is best set up....

I have tried the 10ft USB cord and it won't charge an IPad but it will do the iPhone. I used the 10000 aux battery charger in between my devices and it worked extremely well. The laptop will draw quite a lot of current the smallest ones are normally 90w with most needing bigger supplies now. I used a switched circuit so that charging only occurred while the bike was running.

I don’t want to throw a wrench in the idea but how many amps are the two going to draw. Your stock stator will only supply 300 watts or 25 amps. I would first want to know how many amps you are pulling with everything on and charging your laptop and phone. If you are pulling more than 25 amps you are going to be discharging your battery.

I would do as Dan said, mount the plugs in the trunk, and run a separate circuit off the batter but I think I would stick with a five amp fuse, if that will handle the load.

Yup; I know the Old Wings have limited electrical headroom. I've got an HID headlight (35W vs. 55W) and LED taillights (.5W vs. 14W) so the small draw from 2 devices will be well within the remaining capabilities.

Just another winter project to add to the list........

Do you want to start working on my list?
Forks
Seat
Clutch
Ignition
Carbs... to name a few :Awe:

No thanks, Brian....I REALLY appreciate the offer, however.....

I let myself be in charge of an overhaul of our 36' Water Rescue boat, so I'm full up this winter...

Brian- We limit it to 50 volunteers; we did 14,000 hours last year....it is interesting and rewarding, but kinda ugly when we recover bodies that have been in the water for a while...but that's what we signed up for. I like being back on the water! LOL

A laptop takes a lot of juice but a an iPad or tablet are much less demanding. A phone usually charges on five watts and an iPad takes 10. I am not sure about other tablets but my daughter can charge hers on the computer.
