Well I bought off a buddy for $500.00. It had a blown head gasket. I have had it now for two years just sitting in my garage looking lonely. I wasn't in to big of a hurry to repair as I don't have my license to ride it. Being a long haul trucker at the time I didn't have the time. It is in fantastic shape. I just recently did the head gaskets and all was good till I tried to start it. It didn't want to start at first, I realized I did not have the timing set ( I am not a bike mechanic). I set the timing and it started immediately. It ran great until it broke an intake valve for the #1 hole. So now I am paying an education tax...lol
Luckily it did not take the piston out. I bought a used head today and just have to lap the valves and reassemble it. I look at as just a hobby and when I am all done there won't be to much I don't know about this bike.
welcome to classic ...ouch ... there is plenty of help to get it timed right ... start a thread on it and the member will advise ... this forum all about trying to stop mistakes that can happen a and lots info on process and hard parts to do
You won't be the first one to make that mistake and I am sure you also won't be the last
As Joe said heaps of good info here on how to get the job done right with the least amount of pain :good:
Welcome to the forum, Thats a good looking bike...Yep big learning curve but once you know them they aren't all that bad, harder to work on but very dependable and need very little for a long time, do them right and they will serve you well.
Welcome from a fellow new guy. I just picked up an '83 Interstate with plenty of 'minor' issues. If you run into any problems or find any good solutions, let me know; there's a good chance I've had to address some of the same problems, or will eventually realize that I have the same problems with mine. Hope you're having as much fun finding out how much you don't know as I am.
