I am BP, 22 years old, and just purchased a 1982 GL1100 Interstate for $1350 a few days ago.

It runs and rides well, but I need a new rear tire before I can really go anywhere that is long distance or high speed and feel safe on it. I live near largest city in my state and could not find a place that will take less than a month to get my wing in. I rode it home and lost my side cover not too far from the purchase, need new rubber grommets in there, I had not realized that until I saw it flying in the mirror!

I think suspension may need inspected too there, because rear air suspension failed and were replaced with springs. It feels ok though.

I had not been on a bike for about a year by the time I got this one, and this biggest bike I ever owned. Don't tell my girlfriend, I think I'm in love.

ask me anything

Welcome from Oz. I used Shinko 230s from American Moto tire. You just need to find someone that can fit them for you. My brother lost the rh side cover as it was a secondhand unit and missing one pin the first time he rode the Rats Nest. Luckily he recovered it with a few scratches from the side of the road. I now have some discrete cable ties that work as lanyards to prevent that from happening again.

Welcome to Classics. Buy your tire on line, go to Harbor Freight and buy the tools to do it yourself and never rely on a dealers schedule again or their inflated labor rates.

Sounds like a good idea, will have to imitate that side cover idea. I do also need to make another key.
seller had said that he recommend to replace with the same tires as were on the bike currently, that a new rear tire should last and then replace both tires when that's done. I think the front has about 70% of the tread remaining, the rear about 20% left, it's dang near smooth. I did a quick google and saw "recall" in the suggested search term when I began typing me880, so I will definitely have to do some research before making a decision.

Thanks joedrum and zman for the welcome.

I probably will follow your advice, though I was hoping that the shop would inspect the rear suspension.
The seller had said after the rear air suspension failed, as repair he replaced, and put in springs in back.
I am wanting to make sure the shocks are adjusted properly to handle passenger and saddlebags.

Bradley I really like Metzler tires and I will be replacing the front Shinko with Me880 as I have already replaced the back Shinko with a Metzler Lasertech. I liked the Shinkos for there price and performance and Backlander was the one that put me on to them. They don't last as long as some of the other tires but I still believe that they are extremely good value. Shinko Tourmaster 230s which are best suited to the early Goldwings, shame they are not available here in Oz.

The Shinkos are good tires ran 2 sets on my 81.. ride daily and went to Hannibal, MO from Dallas on my first set.. about year and few months on that 4 ply one.. and then about 9 months on a 6 ply series.. ride to Colorado Springs from Dallas, towing trailer both times.. home built cut down boat trailer.. with xcargo car topper on it.. now gonna put 'stones on it.. just for something new..
