Can one have a good amount of material say just shy of 1/8" and the pad be at the end of it's service life? I had to replace my front pads today, and I was sure they were very near metal on metal from the noise. My bike has always been an on and off front brake squeaker, but this was worse than normal and stopping power was fading. When I got the first caliper off I was surprised to find almost an 1/8" of material on the pads. These pads are very old, they had red paint on them from way back when I painted the calipers red. However, the material looked odd...very, very dry and just "off."

What do you guys think? years of the most extreme heat a Wing suffers here in the desert affecting the material?

Also, the new pads were what the merchant said were the next size up(the didn't have the right ones in stock) as in more material on the pads. EBC FA69/3. They installed easily.

Anyway the noise is gone and the front brakes are stopping better.

~O~

Pads I took off, one had almost an 1/8th" left the other had nothing but the steel plate. Never squealed.

In short, the answer to your question is, YES. Brake pad material is fiber, metal and sometimes other things. It is bonded all together with a resin or, glue. The glue is what can overheat and causes the surface of the brake pad to get a glazed finish that doesn't stop as effectively as new brake pads. One way of overcoming this is applying an omnidirectional finsh on your rotors, this will keep the brake pads fresh on the surface like a fine sandpaper would. Look at some of the newer bikes, you can see lines, or some other surface than just a mirror surface.

The brake pads front and rear will interchange but are not the same part numbers. So I have to figure there is some friction material differences in them.
