I put a car tire on the rear of my VTX 1800. I searched "darkside" here in this site and found a few comments with respect to the width provided by the swing arm in the GL1100.

Has anyone here used a car tire on their 1100? If so which tire. Thanks in advance for any comments pro or con. I have heard them all on other forums. I know several Valk riders and several VTX riders who went to the "darkside". My experience was a prelude to a 6,000 mile ride. I had narry a problem with the Goodyear American tire.

My general concern is that motorcycle tires wear out to quickly.

How quickly is too quickly? My last Bridgestone rear tire lasted 13,000 miles and the front has near 14,000 on it.

ive looked into this alot there is quitethe modifying to do to the swing arm and rear brake rod to get clearence and the other problem is the rim on the 1100 is a 1/2"narrower than the 1500 rim 3"verses 3 1/2"..so that is what were up against with 1100s...im going for it with one of my bikes......

Thanks for the replies. Gerry 13K is exceptional for a m.c. tire. Can get double that with a car tire with very little noticeable wear after 26K. Which Bridgestone. I got 5K on my BMW with the original Bridgestones that came with the new bike.

Joe I wrote an article with photos on the Colorado VTX Riders website. Under "Stories"

I've been looking at that tire myself and when I have a change to do some measurements, I was going to look at it a lot close. You are aware it is not tubeless?

Hmmm ...I did mount a tire on a 16” rim ...it was a used tire and 82 rim ...never did mod the swing arm ..lost all my bikes and stuff never got to finish things ...this tire looks ok to me for 80-81 wheels needs tube ...I’m thinking the 17” rims are like less than three inches wide ..I think there 2.75” it’s a gamble ...seems a tube makes it less a gamble ...
