Did someone say "external alternator" for a 1200?

its slick ... but it seems to me the way everyone goes on about cam belt changing ...putting a electric load high drag on one cam belt witch would be constant ...mixed with the intermittent load of valve spring seem to me ..to be very belt stressing ...and i wouldnt want to add more stress to belt than it already has

I looked closely at that front mounted kit years ago, even talked to the guy making it.
It's not driven from a cam belt. There is another pulley added to drive it off the crank.
Very clever really but I didnt like the look of an alternator sticking out front like that and at the time there were very few running it for comparison of reliability so I went with the side mount.

I was hoping it's run off the crank. Besides the extra load on the cam belt, it would turn at 1/2 engine speed, so RPMs would need to be up there for good charging.

sheesh you would think this is a c5 ignition and we are NGW ... :smilie_happy: :smilie_happy: :smilie_happy:

just kidding everyone ....steve what a great point .... well in light of everything ...this was the one easy timing belt to change ...hmmm not so now ...

best deal i have ever seen is the guy who center mounted alternator above motor ... and it ran off the crank with belt .....he had room as he also had single carb set up also ....kind of like where most mount a supercharger ....

Well bottom line is I think the duplitech is a clever design but as far as I can tell the entire assembly is held on with just the 2 stock cover bolts. If extra support were added then I could trust it.
Sure would be nice to come up with a drive that didn't require any mods to radiator location.
Oh wait....cm85 has a rear cover drive system that requires no mods.....

What about some of those bicycle dynamos off the back tire? :smilie_happy:
