I want to start recording my rides and think I want a GoPro to do it. Have one, what do you think of it? I already know one needs to buy the SD card separately and the user manuals are online.

We sold GoPro cameras at our dealership. I didnt like the bulkiness of it, and purchased three Contours instead. Awesome cameras and never had an issue, but Contour just went out of business. There have been issues with GoPro cameras shutting off for no reason during recordings. I've also had battery issues in cold weather.

My Contour also had reduced battery life in -30 degree weather but would not just shut off.

Here is a new camera I will probably purchase next. I've have awesome success with every Garmin product ever purchased and see no reason why this would be any different. The 2000 mAh battery lasts up to 3 hours at 1080P. That's really fantasic, ours wont go that long even at reduced quality.

If you want to try one, let me know, maybe we can work something out if you promise to do a camera review for the forum.

Loved the new Gopro white ( cheapest one $220 aud from hong kong)using my iPhone as the remote. Bought 3 extra batteries and charger from China which allowed me to charge batteries while riding. Definitely worth they upgrade from my old hero. :good:

The Garmin runs $300-400 depending on the model. That is about what the Contour cost (i bought the GPS equipped versions). I think a GoPro is about that price for the fancier ones. The video of Hooch riding down the highway after the C5 install was filmed with my Contour, and a GoPro looks exactly like it. Great video quality.

Recently bought the go pro hero 2... and the next week the 3 hit the stores.. haven't used it much.. short vid and one or two shots... got the clear case to mount on the wing to shoot through the screen but haven't had a shake down drive with it yet.. I have added a power take off plug the also has 2 built in usb ports also.. total of three .. devices can be connected..

everyone should set up to film all contact from the police stops done on bikers or cagers ...is the only reason id want one hidden totally and have surround view and instantly sent in real time somewhere where they cant get to it ...or destroy it ...what a great mod to do to a bike ...and owner protecting device for your bike.....better than a lawyer for sure ..... :ahem:

I like my Drift X170.
Its 170 degree wide angle lens gives you the field of view close to what you see.
Not sure about GoPro's FOV.
What about external microphone input jack?
If you want to enjoy the engine sound, that is also a must.
Because I think it's impossible for the built-in mic to have good wind noise reduction.
Unfortunately X170 doesn't have it and if you go above 30~40 MPH, wind noise is all you hear.

As for the battery, X170 has USB so you can hook up 12V from the motorcycle battery thus unlimited battery life while riding (and recording).
It takes regular AA batteries so no need to worry about charging either.

Comes with wireless remote for record/stop.

You bring up some good points. My Contour is 135 but the roam was 170 like the GoPro. The new Garmin Virb has 3 settings to choose from but its not listed yet what they are. You can also take 8, 12, or 16 megapixel still photos with it...even while recording video.

The Contours have removable batteries but you must use the camera as the re-charging device, which sucks. When your batteries are dead, you must stop recording and wait to charge them.
According to the owners manual from the Garmin, it can be used while charging via USB port, or they have an external charging device if you had a spare battery to swap out.

Wind noise is non existent with the Contour if using the waterproof housing, but horrible if you dont use it. I've got a professional Sony "lipstick" cam with remote microphone. Thats awesome especially if you stuff it into your backpack. All exhaust noise, no wind noise.

Well folks I'm looking forward to testing a Contour camera that Paul from C5performance was kind enough to offer to lend me. This is one of his personal cameras that he will be loaning me. After I get it in a week I'll be putting it through it's paces as only a novice like myself can and reporting here on it's performance from a novice's perspective. This will include video that I'll be posting here using the cameras software.

Thanks Paul!

This is the first time I've edited a video, I've never used this kind of program and I was even able to add music. I used Imageshack to host the video because Youtube was taking forever and the first attempt failed, one isn't supposed to use copyrighted media anyway. It's really short, just the length of the song and again it's a first try with all of this stuff.

I do have some first impressions of the Contour camera though, it's very easy to work with and the GPS version Paul lent me is really cool. I disabled the stats window in this video because I realized it showed I was speeding and didn't want that shown. I totally screwed up both attempts to get the stick-on helmet mounts right so the image is tilted :Doh2: An adjustable side mount would be far superior to the stick-on mount I'm using. Lastly for now, I was shocked how large the video files are, this 4+ min, video is 267 mb.

More to come...

You can get several styles of helmet mounts and two of them swivel. I didnt send you one because i'd never get my camera back....lol.

Great job video editing. Remember, the better the file quality, the larger the file will be. For Youtube stuff, as we discussed, you can switch the camera to the lower setting.
If you come across a section of highway you wished was being filmed in higher resolution just stop, switch the camera to the other setting, and continue on your way.

Have fun!!

Just about any camera will do, of course some have more farkles and do-dads. Just get creative and change the camera view. Forward facing, rear facing, low position catching the front wheel, change it up and see somethings you didn't see from a normal camera position. I used a simple "Flip" camera to make this video.
