Does anyone know if the voltage regulator, that changes the voltage from 12 to 7 that goes to the fuel gauge and the temp gauges, can be "partially" bad if the temp gauge works but the fuel gauge doesn't? I replaced the sender in the tank but the mechanic thinks that the gauge is bad. Joe 1983 Goldwing GL1100

IT could be possible that one of the leads coming out of the regulator is not putting out the voltage to the gauge. One way to test this theory would be to swap the leads going to the fuel and temp gauge, and see if the problem transfers to the other gauge. If it does not, then the gauge may be defective.
Have you ohmed the wire from the gauge to the sender to verify it is good?
I had a similar issue with mine when I first got it...neither the temp OR the fuel gauge worked. I found they were both disconnected from the regulator. Once hooked up, they both worked for a while, then the fuel gauge stopped. I finally found that the ground wire on the sender wasn't making good contact. Once I fixed that, the fuel gauge has been working fine.
hth

I looked at the wiring diagram, the fuel and temp gauge use the same "hot" wire so if the regulator is bad I'd expect both gauges to read wrong.

I'd be looking for a loose connection or a bad gauge.
