Hi from the blue grass state, i am a retired cnc programmer going on 3 yrs and a nut about old goldwings. I HAVE A 1979 GL 1000 totally stock. I bought this bike from my brother who lived in south Florida 2 yrs ago. It had sat in my dads shed for about 24 yrs. out of the wheather, which was good. My Dad had a stroke in 1985 and never rode the bike again. After my Dad passed away in 2010 my brother sold me the bike.I brought it back to ky. I pretty much gave up hope that the bike would ever run again. I have owned several Hondas, a cb450, cb160, a 1963 honda cub, 1979 Yamaha sx1100 and a Cushman stepthru 1949. So i have enjoyed motorcycles all of my life. After fresh gas, oil, plugs and filters . I started the bike, IT RAN, but very poorly! The left cylinders smoked like a steam engine! I called my dear brother who amitted trying to start the old wing and said he thinks somthing broke!!!!So i hauled the bike to a guy in northern ky who has a small shop, i had heard a lot about this guy so i thought what the heck.A week later the guy calls and said i have a cracked piston ring and ofcourse the carbs where shot. So i cleared it with the wife, got to keep her happy and she said it would be a retirement gift to myself. So a little over 2500 dollars later i picked up the bike.Man am i in the hole! But the thing runs great. Here is what he did. Pulled the engine, split the cases , replaced the rings, honed the cylinders, rebuilt the heads( lapped the valves) replaced the belts , rebuilt the clutch, rebuilt the front and rear mc and claibers.Rebuilt the carbs and a complete tune up.I have put on new tires and new cables. I never dreamed that an old goldwing could be such a great bike. I know i will never recoup my money but everytime i ride i think of my dad. I look forward to any comments i hope i can be a small part of this forum. Ky fabman
