i always find the smoothest least vibrating rpm ...usually about halfway in rpm zone plus some maybe and run there in that zone ... this carves the smoothest path in my book ... after redoing hooch this is the method i use ... i did not rebuild everything but did enough to deserve the same treatment .... hooch rockets to the top of rpm virtually noiseless from motor ... but many things were done to tighten things up ... but thats my way of doing it ...i never listen to the blab from others about how to do it ... this way seemed to make the most common sense to me

With the current gearing, she definitely has more from top gear @ 30 MPH.
I believe the peak power comes around 10K rpm. So hopefully with taller gearing and tachometer, I can ride her in traffic around here.

How should I break in the engine?

When you get started don't idle it very long, the rings need to seat, prolonged idling(no load)is detrimental to that. Have timing and carb adjustments close enough so you can jump on it and go. Light to medium applications of throttle, running through the gears to about 50% redline rpm will help seat the rings. Avoid steady throttle openings, keep varying the rpms and the load. After the first 50 miles or so you can increase the load and rpms, brief full throttle acceleration in the lower gears.

that sounds like one very tall tale from history lol.... 540 miles between those two places ...

I agree but Mike would drive full out when going from/to those locations.. he said nothing less then 100 .. and said gas was same.. 8 mpg . But there is that fudge factor in there... and thinking back your right .... now..... maybe 4 hours.. been over 30 years since I heard him talk about it...

Here she is.

Unfortunately the front fender was cafe'ed by PO. I am on eBay watch but very difficult to find replacement.

I always ask questions too late, doesn't I?
I already put 50 miles on her. My first test ride was around the neighborhood so I guess I went through the gears. After that I went to a stretch of road and went back and forth. That was a few minutes of 30MPH run followed by u-turn and repeat. Then my usual mini twisty.

Hopefully that would be okay break-in so far.

That's a 125? Looks like my cb 250t with high exhaust. Did it also have the cable front caliper?

Yes she is 125. Although PO appears to put CL160 exhaust.
I am not sure what the cable front caliper is. It is usual SLS drum brake.

super nice id like to have one ... back in the day a honda 160 would hang in there with my stupid ass where other bikes would die quickly  :whistling:

Thank you, Joe.

I wish she was 160 or even 250. 125 is not practical nowadays even for city riding.
But it appears she got a little more power than my China 125 engined CT90.
So hopefully I can use her for in town errands.

after driving trucks over the road for 30 years and living in Amarillo which is in the middle between those two points made me go hmmmmmm that's not possible lol . not sure a f1 racecar could pull that one off heck guess if you mounted one heck of a fuel cell on a funnycar it might make it lol

I guess I had a "duhh" moment. Now I've seen the pics again and recognize the drum brakes. My cb 200 has a front disk brake with mechanical caliper. Cable actuated. No hydraulics.

Mechanical caliper!
That sounds interesting...

17T sprocket is finally on!
Rode around the neighborhood.
Ran strong and no worries of lugging (she just doesn't have that much torque to even attempting it.. LOL)

With 15T, the first gear was too low (maybe good for steep hill climb but this is a city-scrambler).
Now I can use the 1st gear a bit more.

Thanks again for all the advices/comments.
