An explosion Sunday morning critically injured a man in the desert off of Interstate 15 near Sloan.
According to Las Vegas police officer Laura Meltzer, several people were target shooting around 8:45 a.m. on Bureau of Land Management property. They were mixing a substance together that would make a loud “boom” when shot, Meltzer said, and it’s apparently something target shooters do often. The substance prematurely exploded while one man was mixing it, injuring him.
He was transported from the location, which was about five miles south of the St. Rose Parkway exit on I-15, by helicopter to University Medical Center in critical condition. Two other people had minor injuries, according to police.
BLM fire and ranger trucks, multiple Clark County fire department ambulances, Las Vegas police and a Las Vegas fire engine responded to the scene.
Paramedics were carrying stretcher boards and large packs into the desert, and police pickup trucks were parked along the ridge line of a hill in the area.
The area was closed off with police tape, but no road closures were in effect.
Meltzer said so far in the investigation, the only crime committed was trespassing on BLM property.
