I was on my way to work this morning and from the top of this hill I heard a noise(1/8 mile away). I was going down the hill and the Harley guy was coming up from the bottom. His bike, a Heritage Softail I think was running on only one cylinder. The closer he got as we passed each other, the more I felt sick for the guy. I figured he was just trying to get it home with no other option than to ride it there. I heard once that the V-twin design is extra beefy because the V-twin is basically trying to tear itself apart. Well that's what I was hearing, I could hear that engine being totally destroyed. Not only hearing the miss, but parts tinking and shredding, and lastly he was leaning forward like those people on scooters willing it to go faster.

It was totally unnerving. I have a 20+ year career in medicine, and the feeling was very close to what I feel after someone passes.

I was in the highlands of Scotland a couple of years ago when an ignition amplifier died on me. Had to ride 20 odd miles over some steep hills on 2 cylinders till I came to a small town. There I was able to find bed and breakfast to stay for a few days ( no hardship ) while I had one shipped up from D.Silvers.
They were the hardest and most unpleasant miles I have ever done and I feel for any rider , no matter what their machine , who struggles in the same way.
At least I , and by the sound of it Mr Harley rider , did not have to push.

Coming from a mechanical field, it makes me sick when people subject machinery to that type of abuse. He deserves the expense and frustration that he is going to have to endure because of his stupidity.

Unless you know why his machine sounds rough - it could be after all a similar problem as myself - then choose words wisely. He may had have NO choice but to struggle on with the ride . Shame no-one came to his aid. Unless some one did and he chose to refuse it. Sometimes engines sound a lot worse than they actually are especially when out of sorts. I can even hear a healthy Harley miles away , even from behind me , cause the owners usually fit them with LOUD pipes.

No you dint.....yer just sayin that..... :smilie_happy:  :smilie_happy:
It's the leaning forward thing that always gets me...like that's REALLY gunna help! :Doh2:
I gotta say...I do that too.... If i'm in the car, and something weird happens, I find myself picking my butt up off the seat...like that's gunna take some weight off, and let the car roll farther easier.... :smilie_happy: :smilie_happy:

As a mechanic with well over 30 years under my belt, I can't and won't bad mouth or blame the guy because I wasn't there and don't know his situation. I hope he made to where he was headed safely and gets it back on the road soon. You know, it really isn't about what you ride its just about getting on 2 wheels and riding.

Too true :good: :moped:

I make no excuses for what I wrote. If my bike sounds like crap, I will not ride it down the road. Too much at stake for me personally. I don't have a silver lining in my wallet to pay for fixing it, but I do have a cell phone and roadside assistance, and if I need it, i use it. That is what it is there for.
