I started to do my brakes today and stopped just as I started. The yahoo that I had do the brakes last time used something that left a whitish coating on the underside of the metal caps covering the hex pins that hold the pads in the caliper.

One is supposed to use a flat blade screw driver to remove the metal dust caps. One look at the chewed slots told me I was screwed. Feeling emboldened from my recent mechanical success I dug out a drill/back-out set and got to it. Never done it before but I figured go for it the PBblaster didn't work(does it ever?), time to learn something new.

I broke a bit in the first cap so I got a bigger step bit. The back-out worked nicely on the first, but the other three were real nail bitters twisting that back-out so much until they broke loose. On the last three I was wondering what I'd have to do if the back-out broke too. :swoon:

Momma Honda really could have put plastic caps over the hex pins.

Maybe you can source the right sized plastic caps? Good it worked out for you. Snapped off easy out bits are as hard to get by as snapped of drill bits.
