When I first found old girlfriend, all I had into her was $600. She looked really rough so I wasn't too worried about theft.

Well, I'm starting to worry. I've put a fair amount of hours and about $800 into her, and suddenly I have something to lose. I live in an apartment w/o garages. Each covered parking spot has a awning support on one side. So I'm thinking about one of those 1" thick cable locks with the built-in lock. There's plenty of room to run it through the frame at the engine. At least this way several guys can't just pick it up and put it in a truck, like they would be able with a brake disc lock, or wheel lock.

Sound good to you guys? I know that if someone really wants to steal it they can, I just can't figure out a better way to protect it with what I have to work with.

I think that cable would be the first step at least and make sure to lock the forks.

Any chance you can park the bike near your window?

How 'bout an alarm. I have one on mine. The shock sensor was a bit tricky to get right but now it works pretty good.

I always park her where I can see her from the kitchen window. I never considered an alarm, probably because I hate them(they have made me look thousands of times...and the vehicle was never being stolen).

Thanks Dan, I might just consider an alarm.

Im never worried about anyone tryin to steal my old ugly bike, Hell... I'd have to pay somebody for it to get stolen :smilie_happy:

I have something similar, O-man. I only use it when I travel, though. I used to worry about my bikes getting stolen. If I forgot to lock it, I would wake up in the night and go out to lock it. Not so much anymore. It may be a false sense of security, but I have never had so much as a rake stolen in the 15 years I have been in this house.

I had a buddy of mine that had his FJ Yamama stolen from right in front of his apt. door 3 times!! Ins. would buy another one, and it would get stolen. He wound up pulling it inside the apartment every night...rain or shine! Needles to say, he lost the deposit when he moved.. :smilie_happy:

It sucks when you don't have a garage, or other place to park that is semi-safe from thieves. I've got one of those cable locks, too, but I haven't needed to use it so far. I figure as heavy, and as clumsy mine(fully dressed) would be to manhandle with the steering locked, and wheels locked, if they're gonna work THAT hard to steal it, let 'em have it... :head bang:
I'm just glad I can pull mine into the garage at night. I park right in front of the shop at work, so the only problem there is Goobers running into it...which they have... :sensored:

Wrap that cable lock thru the rims and the chassis, and around a pole, and you should be as safe as it could get. As has been said, if they want it, they're gonna get it. :(

Survailence Camera. They can see in the dark, record to hard drive, and some software has motion detection as well as an alarm mode. They're getting pretty cheap these days.
Can work right from your kitchen window.

My dad has an electric eye to let him know when someone enters his carport.

I found a thing called driveway alert on ebay that sounds an annoying alarm when it senses anything, loud enough you won't sleep through it. You have to fiddle with the aim to eliminate alerts from cars going by, cats, dogs, etc. If you have a carport you could install it overhead looking down. If you use a cover you can set it on the bike and that would only alarm when the cover is lifted. I do handyman work and when I have to work in a bad neighborhood for any amount of time I leave the sensor in the back of the truck and take the receiver inside with me. They are cheap enough that I bought several.

Let me insure it for a bunch of money first....   :salute:

I was shopping with the wife at Ross and came across one of these bike clubs for $5. I just googled it and you can find them for about $10. They're pretty tough little locks that fit around the front rim and tire. Just make sure that you dont forget it's there or you could do some pretty good damage....( dont ask me how I know  ). I made a flag that drapes across my ignition that reminds me that its there now.
