I got a hankering for something different and a friend wants a GL. What better way than to sell him mine and me get a "new" one.

I saw this and it got me to thinkin:

blue book is 2600 and change.. seems high, but looks nice and has relatively low miles no?.

I'd have to warm up to the extra bells and whistles. I like my 1100.

Is the back/top box removeable? Would 1100 bags work on one of these? I'm still kinda partial to the 1100 body parts, but I could be persuaded.

How is the carb rebuild on these things?
Does the stator put out any more juice - I can't even run heated gloves on my 1100. Well I do but they don't really get that warm
thanks for any input

okay 1200 is lot heavyer but sits great no bags dont swap out....the 84 1200 is my favorite ...the carbs are actualy easier to rebuild and better design ...but if one of the rubber diaphams is bad or more there super exspensive ....the 84 1200 worst trait is backing up under your own power on an incline ....that is a lot of money pony...id diffinitly have to ride and come away with it in perfect shape looks and running wise to be worth that to me

thanks JD.

heavier - that ain't good.

I thought my 78 naked was light, but the 1100 is borderline too much to make it not fun.

that bike even looks heavy
on second thought....maybe I'll look for another 1100. Nicer ones are getting scarce in my neck of the woods tho.

How's the building project going?

good ive been out digging in the mud like a kid in full gory of fun ....im glad pony that weather is allowing me to work on it today ...time has been mostly to cold and muddy....you could always put a 1200 in the 1100 like im doing :hihihi:

an '82 1100 aspencade according to the owners manual weighs in at 702lbs dry and an '86 1200 aspencade weighs in at 730lbs. stator on a 1200 puts out 350w to an 1100's 300w. i've used my electric jacket liner on my 1200 but i didn't have electric gloves at the time

Pony, whatever you decide on will be a good choice, keep us posted, that bike looks sweet..I bet it will ride nicely.. now my 2 cents, I owned a Nomad 1500, sucker was heavy man, nice bike but heavy, no reverse either, it's hard on the knee's, in a few months I will have the alternator conversion set up, you might want to consider that for more juice...

JD: so what would a fair offer be. I might go 24XX. JD how exp. are those diaphrams?(as bad as float needle assemblies?) Still available?

Buzz: ok so 30lbs more - just looks heavier I guess. I like the better watt output.

Lilbeave: are you going with an external alternator setup?

Guys: what other bikes would you consider? I would really like a bmw gs, but they are expensive and harder to find. I am not much into cruisers -- I like to sit upright..

thanks

Yes sir, I think I'm going to give it a go..I don't see it will hurt anything...Check out the 4" pulley post, it's a interesting read.. I had a 2000, 1500 with reverse for about two weeks never really rode it but from the shop to home, big machine but that reverse was nice for sure, Problem with the title and we made them buy it back..That's when we got the Nomad..

if you are looking at a bmw gs1200 then get the gs 1200 adventure, harder to find but 9 gallons of gas goes in the tank

ok my two cents. i just bought a 86 sei and i find it seems lighter than my 75 wing of which i can't put both feet on ground, however on the 1200 both feet are flat and peddling the bike backwards is easier. that being said i have not tried to push it up incline, which i guess would be not good. i find it corners almost as well as my shadow 1100. the thing has more bells and whistles that i have to learn. fyi found fuel injector computor on line for good price bought it just in case. just sayin

Just my opinion, but if you are going to upgrade and stay with a Honda, I would recommend that you consider the 1500 as opposed to the 1200. I still have my 83 as well as the 1500 and ride it most of the time but if you ride two up very much and/or ride interstates much, the difference is night and day. It is heavy at about 900 pounds but you get used to it pretty quick. Mine has the Slipstreamer windshield and I don't like how it looks but after you ride behind it for a while, it definitely grows on you. The difference in power is amazing and downshifting is really only necessary for decelerating. Mine is a 92 and they can be found in the $4-4.5K range.
Think:
1. Reverse
2. Electronic cruise control, set it and forget it.
3. Vastly superior sound and intercom system.
4. If the alternator goes out, it takes an hour to change it. (if you take your time)(and you have the 90 amp compufire option)
5. Two carburetors instead of four to worry about.
6. Almost twice as much room in the bags and trunk as the 1100.

As I mentioned, I still have and ride the 1100 most of the time but anything over 100 miles or if my wife is going along, it's the 1500

yes the 1200 is a fine bike bike when it comes to oldwings .....me personaly i have problems with wieght of things and what i can handle without coming apart at every joint in my body ...im just maxed out already on the 1100s ...others probably would do much better ....as piper said the 1500 is the ultimate tour dog ...its like the greyhound bus of motorcycles ...and made for a million miles plus ...simply the best road dog out there hands down .....if i could go for something i cant afford i think id go for a valkery 1500 with the six carbs and about 50% less plastic ...i might be able to handle that ....even if i have to get a steel belted body suit to stay together :hihihi:

McG: That's cool, but I think I am done with cruisers. It is a cruiser isn't it?

Buzz - 9 gal tank would be good, but I might have to get off the thing before I need gas.

JD; a 1500 sounds nice, but all that gear for the passenger that I'm never gonna have....

I keep coming back to the 83I.

What do I know.....???

Heck buy mine (Ive got my eye on a 1500) is Tacoma close to Wainfleet?

I personally would stick with the 1100.I believe they are better bikes.
I once looked at 1200,and the little bit of extra leg room and power over the 83 1100 did not justify the change to me.I rather opted to upgrade the CB/Audio/Intercom on what I had and am glad I did.

I believe the 1200s are plagged with more electrical troubles than the 1100s.
