Has anyone ever thought about a way to increase the amount of fuel that one of these bikes can carry for us guys going crosscountry? Where would it go?

I've only read of guys rigging a gas can in one of the bags.
Seems kinda counter productive to me. When I go on a long trip there isn't any room left in the bags as it is besides, I need a stop every 100 miles or so anyway.
The sidecar guys really need extra gas because they get lower mpg. Susie (a good friend and member here) has a 7 gallon tank in the sidecar which doubles as a backrest of sorts at the rear. Works out nice.

They use to make axillary gas tanks for the wings that fit where the side covers go one on each side held about 1.5 gallons I see them on eBay every once in a while go for about $75 to $125..or you can make some. just make them to fit the attachment points for the side covers..size up to you.

@60 to 70 mph I get about 400 klm (kilometers) from a tank and the longest distance between fuel pumps on 'made' (sealed - black top) roads in Oz is 375klm so I dont really know why I'm writing this :head bang:

I once thought of changing the fake tank with a real one and running a fuel line to the honda tank.when the fuel gage was getting low just just a little twist to open the valve on the top tank and tadaaa.seen some old goldwing with harley tanks (NGW)that looked nice.Im starting get up there in age and i think the stoping to refuel is a good reason for me to get up and strech my lags. :salute:

There was just a pair on EBAY about a month ago,but hte where NOS and sold for about 300.00

Problem was one sidcar mount runs to close there and I cant use them.

As dan said I thought about putting something in the sidecar, but I still get 35 mpg with the hack that over 150 miles.I dont need more than that.

Just my $.02.I think i have more fun at gas stations when fueling up,meeting new ppl.talking about old bikes and what things ppl have done to theres.my old bike seem to be a good conversation piece.some laught at it(every once in a while Il get the old harley wantabe thing, why dint you just buy one and thats ok.i have 3k into it,if that and not 30k)but for the most part i meet the coolest ppl and see some really nice old wings and i have spent countles times just talking to some one that had an old wing and forgeting all about time.so injoy the fuel stops :good:

I think the attraction to the old "Wings" has a lot to do with people respecting them because they are quiet.
To me the Harley's are just downright irritating to hear screaming down the road with the straight pipes and I think non motorcycle owners feel the same way. Even with non original mufflers on our 4 cylinder they're much quieter than most HD's.

A while back I saw someone who made a gas tank to fit the receiver hitch on his bike. Seemed a bit dangerous just hanging out the back like that, but I suppose the ideal would be a trailer with an extra 5 gal can and a porta-potty. And a cooler for beer. And a tent to keep the bugs off. Oh heck, just stop at gas stations! :)

I bet he named his bike "Pinto"!
