my 81 interstate has a lot of chatter in the motor as you rev up then it calms down to a smooth sound. any ideas?>

where is the chatter?? near the middle of the bike?? could be loose chain or loose stator bolt.. does this happen when revving up at idle/startup or only when pulling from a stop?? if it is always happening idle in nuetral and when puling away.. look to mechanical.. bolt..or clutch .. adjust the clutch cable as best you can to see if that helps when pulling away and these bikes need about 2K rpms to pull from stop..

could be the bolt behine the nut cap on the left hand side back of the motor . it can come loose and rattle and then smooth out when the motor gets in its sweet pot of running. you need to check that right away!!!!!!

just take the plug nut off and that gives you access to the bolt underneath to tighten only ...dont try to loosen it up just tighten
