I just wanted to say hello. I am a lifelong motorcyclist (about 40 years worth) Had a bunch of bikes. My current ride is an 07 Suzuki bandit. I will be trying for an Iron butt ride.....hopefully this summer. I have been thinking about buying a late 70's , early 80's GL or Suzuki gs and bobbing it. I wanted to see what kind of bike the old GL's are. Looking forward to talking to some of you.

Welcome to the forum, any of the GL`s is well suited for a long ride, Ansimp knows that  Something I didnt know when looking for mine was the gear change in the 83 and up models, Only about 5-600 RPM drop but many have said it made a difference.
The only thing that needs to be mentioned is that any repairs need done thoroughly, most things aren't very accessible so it is important to do them right or risk having to do them over, many new have been full of enthusiasm at their new project only to be frustrated and given up..Any competent mechanic can restore and keep them on the road, Sort of like a Ferrari 328 vs. a 302 ford mustang, both are just V8`s but that's where the similarities end, but is is just a motorcycle and a Ferrari is just a car.
Good luck in finding a Goldwing.

82 would be my choice as it has the rpm drop over the 80-81s and dual piston un linked brakes. I currently have a set of 82 front brakes on the way for the Rats Nest upgrade :good:

I stand corrected, thought it was 83 and up..82 would be a great choice for the reason you mentioned.

No worries Jeff :good: , only know as I had the chance to ride both ( Dad's 82 now Steve's). I also thought that the 83 dropped some revs from the 82 but that I am not sure of. If it is going to be a bobber then a standard would be easier to use.

Thanks for the welcome....and all the advice. I've heard the older models are sleepers, and will run forever with a little tlc. I love the sound of these things. Again thanks for the advice. I didn't know about the gearing change. I've heard about the timing belt, any input from you guys?
