I'm needing to transfer my old VHS tapes to DVD, but I'd rather not have to do it thru my 'puter.....mainly because the puter is too far away from the entertainment center for a cable to reach. I'm looking at DVD/VCR combos that supposedly can record from VHS to DVD, but I've found some that say they will, but the fine print says "This device will NOT transfer VHS to DVD, but WILL transfer DVD to VHS".....like anyone is gunna do that anyway.... :Doh2:

Anyone out there know of a decent quality machine that doesn't require a ton of $$$, and an FCC broadcast license to use?
I've found THIS on fleabay, but would prolly look locally for something similar....

:thanks:

I had a Panasonic DVD player/recorder-/VHS/S-VHS player recorder combo unit about 5 years ago that was awesome! Unfortunately, it was stolen along with some other A/V gear. I might still have the manual for it, if so, I'll get you the model number.

Most of the tapes and equipment have safeguards to prevent such copy procedures. I've been wanting to do the same thing. I hope you find that model number and it's still available.

The tapes I need to copy are my own...wedding stuff, vacations, etc. No copyrighted/store-bought stuff. :good:
The tapes will continue to deteriorate over time, so I want to transfer them to DVD....at least they'll be view able for a while longer.

I have Philips DVDR 3545V (VCR DVD combo) and I did copy from VHS to DVD couple of times.
I think I did it on one device.
I also remember on some occasions I had to use another VHS player for VHS playback then connect AV output to Philips AV input to record on DVD. Maybe that was for those copy-protected VHS tapes...

Here's the manual.

https://download.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dvdr3545v_37/dvdr3545v_37_dfu_aen.pdf

It's on page 53.
And it says it won't work if it's copy-protected. So in your case, it should be fine.

I use a encoder box connected to a VHS player.
The box changes the video and audio to digital so I "record" it to my computer as one file.
I can then edit the video file on the computer then burn it to DVD.

The box I use is a ADVC-100. It's at least 10 years old and works great.

I saw stuff like that while searching, but....I would have to move the VCR into the room with the puter......that is a MAJOR pita, since the VCR is tied/wired in with the rest of the home theater/entertainment system. It took me two days to get all that crap wired up and working properly....and it ain't flashin "12 Noon" all the time. It actually keeps the correct time....I ain't messin wid it now! :smilie_happy:
And..befo anyone asks, I don't have a laptop....just a desktop. I think I'll just get one of the DVD/VCR combos like posted above from Best Buy(or somewhere).....I think that's gunna be the easiest, and least complicated.
:thanks:

How bout THIS UN?

Toshiba one should work.
It's best to get it locally in case it doesn't work. Much easier to return.
Don't know BestBuy has it locally though..
Maybe there is a ship to the store option?

I done checked...they have it at the store closest to me house.

Joel, I have a DVD burner designed specifically for transferring to DVD from an analog or digital source. I am transffering our old videos using our original 1989 Panasonic VHS camera since that is the unit we made the VHS tapes with. The transfers are awesome! It works much better than the VHS-DVD combo units! I am travelling down the coast at the moment on sea trials. When I get home I will look up the machine model.
