hey everybody,i am trying to line up the marks on timing belt pulleys.i rotated the engine with the belts on and lined up the marks on the pulleys with engine case.then i took off the belts.the plugs were out and valve adjusters all the way loose.when i removed the right belt the pulley popped out of place off the mark. i know i should not turn pulleys with belts off.also when the pulleys marks were lined up, the t-1 on fly wheel don't line up. i'm kinda confused on what to do.

It's normal for the right belt to jump a little unless it's clamped down. The concern should be with the T-1 mark. Make positively sure it is lined up or you could bend some valves. What's probably confusing you is the crank has to make two rotations to complete a cycle while the cams only make one rotation. When you finish lining up and putting the belts back on, make sure you rotate the engine by hand several times to make sure the marks on the cams and the crank continue to line up properly before thinking about starting it. Good luck.

yeah i have sat here and read that a few times. i did not use the wrench tie because i thought when i loosened the valves the pulley would not turn but it did.so do i need to put the belts back on and start over?if so i still cant figure out how to line up left and right pulleys on mark.this is probly simple to do but not for me.left pulley is on mark right is 1 to 2 teeth off

Sense you have everything backed off and the belts off already, line up the crank on the t-1, then mark the front of the crank with a marker so you don't have to crawl around to side each time to check it. Line up the cam pulleys , it won't hurt anything to turn them to the correct position, then you can clamp them in place until you get the belts on. Then follow the tutorial for correct positon and tensioning on the belts.

These pics show you which marks to use on the cam pulleys. With these lined up, the T-1 mark on the crank should also line up, BUT...if the T-1 mark is not lined up with the two cam pulley marks also lined up, then something is not correct. The t-1 mark can be lined up in two ways, but the cam marks will be 180* off with the T-1 mark in the BTC position. You want the T-1 mark lined up with the #1 piston at TDC...that way the cam pulley marks will be correct.
Hope this did not confuse you even more...

thanks mike, i sat in my chair and thought it out.and it hit me what i was not doing right.it is clear now.im not that quick.now i just have to get some practice. thanks again, ken

Your welcome Ken, just be sure you check and double check that all the marks line up thru several hand rotations after you install the belts cause you don't want to end up with any bent valves.
