I've joined 2 other forums so far trying to find a new "home" that matches my bike building attitude, which err... usually involves a lot of torching, grinding, welding cutting, trinkering and a fair amount of cussing and drinking..
So...Hey Everyone.
New to goldwings and forum from Arkansas!
So, I've ridden, wrenched and built my own bikes since I was a kid. I currently have a Ironhead sportster, Yami Virago and I've recently added a "barn find" 79 GL1000 that is gonna be my next project.
A little history on the bike and up to where I am now. I got the GW free 3 years ago from a woman who claimed her Ex-Husband "road up to the house, parked the bike by a shed out back, packed his bags and left". True story from what I hear, and he never came back for her or the bike. So this was in the mid 90's I guess, and the bike sat there until I acquired it in about 2010. 18,000 miles and It had a few parts picked off over the years (clutch and throttle perch, saddle bags, fairing) but basically sat untouched-in the weather.
SO I get the bike back in 2010 and haul it home. I go through and check the fluids, compression, etc. Carbs are SHOT as you can imagine, but with a little cleaner, starter fluid and a fresh batter the bike actually fired up. It wouldn't idle but it surprised me it started at all. So I tear the carbs off with the plan of starting on them first. Long story longer-I end up going to Afghanistan for two tours and while I am gone my wife moves houses. Bless her soul for trying but most of the carb parts are lost in the process and the bike is left outside again for another two years with no carbs on it.
So, I'm home and ready to start this build. I have a list a million miles long of what I'll need but the obvious is the carbs and now due to rust a valve job.
I'm thinking of going for a street fighter/rat ROD look...I say rat rod, not rat bike look because I want it to be clean yet simple. For carb I'm looking at the single carb conversion because it seems a lot of people are happy with that and I did one on my Virago a few years ago and I love it.
I'll have a lot of questions I'm sure and will be looking to barter, beg or buy parts.
Now, for some pictures. I know the wing is "rough" but to me she is a blank canvas waiting for me to go Van Gough on!
