Greetings to all,

New(er) member in Atlanta since last year, and must say information gleaned to date from other members has been VERY helpful! I don't post much but, figure its time.
Ride for last year or so has been a work in progress. Its a 3 wheeler. I got it as a 78 gl1000 with a reversed VW transaxle and suspension. It had sat for 6-7 years
and had seen much better days. Trailer it home and took stock. Had usual storage issues on carbs and found 3-4th gears on VW trans was gone. rebuilt carbs and tranny over few months and got it to move on its own.
GL1000 motor smoked some on startup and clutch was slipping. Got lucky and found a 83 gl1100-I bike for parts. Compression and clutch on 1100 good, so out went 1000 and in 1100!
Now , this bike was a 78 at heart with Vetter fairing and painted pearl white with weird rear wheel fenders. Cool enough as 3 wheeler but appearance was so dated. Pulled out MIG and grinder and fitted 83 front end , Faux tank cover and front fairing to 78 frame. Looked much better but back half still strange looking. Found some 11 inch wide Jesse James fenders on fleabay and hand made mounts to cover the 225-78-15 rear wheels.
Tremendous difference!!!
Was to have a friend do paint work for me. Unfortunately he was in middle of moving when i needed him, so i bit bullet, ordered paint from House Of Color and did it myself. (Helps that i am a technical rep for Valspar industrial coatings group for last 22 years and Valspar bought HOC years ago).
Came out gorgeous in black base with 4 coats of clear. Got it down to fall rally in Panama City Beach and had lots of good times.
current projects include different radio and converting rear VW drum brakes to Disc.
Once i sort out how to get pictures up, will post them.

Now, to serious question, does anyone know if GL1200 motor will fit in 78 frame? Since it is a 3 wheeler, i do not have to worry about rear wheel, swing arm or frame clearance.
thanks to all

Welcome to CGW echomann12, from southern Arkansas. You came to the right site for motor interchanges, I'm sure they will be along shortly to answer your questions. Can't wait to see the pics of what sounds like an interesting build you have going.

Looking forward to some pictures. Have been a flat 4 fan for a lifetime. We have owned many VWs and Subarus and now a GW1100l. Keep up the good work.

I should of paid more attention to cooking my breakfast than CGW. Not only am I nursing the generator but I gam now eating slightly burnt bacon an eggs off the barbe. Who says we can't multitask.

just be glad the eggs and bacon is all that got burned  by the way how you keep the eggs from falling through the grill? :headscratch: :hihihi:
Hot plate and bar-b-que mat, easier than doing the dishes and the only cooking device that doesn't require electricity at home
