Hi ya all, been a while. Last time I was on was before my last crash back on April 17, 2015. Anyway....
I still have my 1980 GL1100i but she had been in my shed since I crashed her Oct 09. I am needing to do something with it.
I have researched building a Reverse Trike frame and use the engine. But I also am thinking about putting a sprocket on the driveshaft and chain drive it with a high output DC motor and batteries. A Hybrid of sorts. What I am needing an answer to is on the oiling system of the 1100 engine at the driveshaft areas. Can a 1100 be flat towed with the engine off? If I am running the electric motor 85% of the time it would be best to kick the 1100 into netrual and shut it down. So is it pressure lubed or splash? The plan is to charge the batteries at home and that would give me about a 150 mile range and then fire the 1100 up to go farther if needed. I would hang a 120 amp alternator on the front to charge the batteries while driving in a pinch. Plugged in at home it costs about $1.30 to charge the batteries enough to go 150 miles. That would take 4.75 Gallons @ $12.80 on Gas engine alone. I very rarely go more than 125 miles in a day but I do like to do a longer tour at times.
The trike will be front wheel drive using a Subaru rear diff flipped upside down and driven by the 1100 facing backwards with the driveshaft going forward. The rear swingarm would not be powered. The Goldwing and electric motor together would give me almost 150 Horsepower @ 144 Volts AC and weighs about 1400 pounds with all batteries and controllers. Batteries are 144 Volts at 200 Ah and 700 pounds just by them self. Fully charged the batteries are rated to go 162 miles @ 80% discharge.
The 1100 will be Single Weber carbed and C5 ignition, Stator and voltage regulator removed and replaced by the alternator.
