Well, I've done it now....I checked and double-checked the timing marks, but I, quite obviously, f*cked it up big time.
The question is: What's the best way to go from here? Second hand motor? Fix the one I've got?
What is the least expensive way to repair the damage I've done?

I trust you guys to give me the path of enlightnement.

I'd sell the bike as-is for parts, but I don't think I'd get much for it.....

Damn, sure did a number on the piston.
What's the full story John?

Of course a running bike will sell easier and faster for more money.
Your buying an 1800 anyway needs to be concidered.
If you can find a good 1100 engine, even a complete parts bike, swap engines.
Should be able to get it together for around $500.

I had the motor apart to change valve seals....I swear I double checked all the marks when I put the belts back on......guess not well enough, huh?

I already have the 1800 - bought it last Saturday:)

Damn Shipmate, that doesn't look good... I really got a sick feeling in my stomach after seeing that and knowing how the rest of your bike looks.

The only way you are ever going to get anything more $750 for your bike is as a runner, so looks like the easiest thing would be a new to you motor. Is that the original motor to the bike?

My 1100 started pissing from the fork seals as soon as I started working on the 1200! They are jealouos creatures I tell you!!!!!!!!

John I'd swap out the motor and then sell the bike, sell the bike as a runner, and give the original motor to the new owner so he/she has the original motor to do with it as he/she wants to.

Wow John! I am sorry to see that!! The fastest thing to do would be a swapped out motor. But if you wanted to pull the piston, you can have my '81 pistons. A gasket kit to split the case runs about $139. :crying:

(Unfortunately it is still cheaper to find a running engine)

This is my new bike - I think the problem was I had them both in the garage......together......

My GL1100 saw the NEW bike and that was the end of that......

Beautiful bike!! (But now you know what happens when you put two girls together! A little bit of jealousy and next thing you know....it is teeth, hair and eyeballs all over the parking lot!! )

You really think I can find a running motor for lass than $139? That's a generous offer on the pistons, Gerry.
I guess I'm not sure where to find a running motor - not on Craig's List locally anyway...

If you want them, let me know they; are already out of the engine. Just use your bearings, mine were worn out. The rings were decent with good compression, but yours have less mileage on them and are already broken in to your cylinder.

I also have the heads with working valves, but the valves and springs are worn pretty good.

(And BTW, I found my '83 engine for $110 plus shipping!)

Where, pray tell, didja get an engine for that price? :headscratch:

Ooooh, that hurts! I don't think you missed the timing marks, there would be bent or broken valves in #1 as well. A valve keeper probably let go and she swallowed a valve. Was probably running fine until this happened.

You'll need a piston, head, and gasket set to fix this, as well as some time invested. Is it worth it? To me, yes! To you, ??? If you were closer, I'd love to dig into it with you... Both bikes are beauties!

My mistake John, it was $179.95 plus shipping. (Ebay) Shipping was $172 plus $25 to crate it on a pallet.

If you can spare some more cash you can spend a bit more, take the motor out of this and sell the parts to make up the difference, maybe he would take less.

In Toledo..No mention of motor.

I would leep searching CL using a CL search engine, you might have to drive 100 miles but saving the bike would be worth it.
So sorry about what happened, It isnt mine but I still get a sick feeling seeing it like that.
