Okay, I put new pads on the rear of my '83 1100A and now the tire rubs on the caliper stabilizer bar. There is no lateral movement in the rear wheel and the backrest complains of the burnt rubber odor. I did not remove that assembly and I'm stymied

Are you certain the left side spacers are in the right order and direction?

What brand and size tire are you running?

Some tires are enough larger to rub there even though they are the stock size. It seems the actual tire size is not consistent across the brands.
I hear the Cheng brand will rub.
I have an old Elite II that clears the brake bar by only a hair.

I've read of grinding the support rod where it rubs but I would never recommend that.

you could move the brace over where it attaches to the swingarm in front of the tire maybe enough by moving the rod halfway out of the bracket and haft in might gain an 1/8" or maybe alittle more with a washer or two if the bolt is long enough......

I just happened to remember now, I have the earlier 17 inch wheel running a EII on my '83. The original 16 inch with a EII had rub marks in the same spot. I guess the 16 inch tire is a tad fatter, it looks it too. The fatter look is better IMO.

I've had the same problem with the Dunlop 16" E2s. Tried 404s,first set 10K miles, no problems. 2nd set,10K, no problem. 3rd set, rear started rubbing.Ran it 3K and put a 491 E2 on. Rubbed about 1K later and still is.
I had an old one so I measured and measured. I found that from the top off the sidewall to the top of the other sidewall the tread is 3/16 wider. IMO Dunlap is using a different mold for their tires.
These Dunlops were all made in Indonesia.
