I am getting a new metzler tire this weekend. The ole Metzler tire is being retired after 14,550 miles with dyna beads.
With the bike having 90,000 miles should I replace the rear wheel bearings? Do not believe they have ever been changed. I do know the front bearings have been replaced.

Are there any tricks to replacing the bearings? Does one need a press? Or should I just have the shop replace them?

Second question: I searched and I know there is a post on here on How to get the rear tire off an 83 gl1100 but I could not find it. Can somone point me to this info?

Since I will have the tire off I plan to drain and put something (Do not know what to fill it with) the pumpkin ball. Grease the splines, Is there anything else I should do while I have the wheel off?

Thank you for any replys and helpful info.

As far as the splines are concerned, there are two different camps:

1. Use Moly 60 Paste on the Splines where the final drive engages the rear wheel.
2. Use a Lithium base grease.
(I know I once read where moly 60 should be used, but everywhere I look in the Honda maintenance manual it reads to use a lithium based grease.)
The recommended gear oil for the Final Drive is Hypoid gear oil API GL-5 SAE 90... I just go to my favorite dealer and say give me a bottle of Honda Gear oil.
