Recomended download sites, password cracking

Hi folks, My computer is slowly dying of something but I do have a spare given to me from a fella I helped get rid of some furnishings so he could move out of state, I didnt know him well and dont know where he moved but this computer he gave me needs a password to load and I dont have it. It seems I need to go to a site and download a file to my computer then burn that file to disc then load that file on the affected computer but I`m a bit worried about the many free download sites that are out there, my belief is nothing is truly free and might get something I dont want on my computer.
The place that has it is called Cnet..Any advice? Another site maybe?

I've used Cnet many times with no problem. No guarantees, but it's been good to me.

Cnet is one of the places that MOST software providers use to d load. I've downloaded tons of stuff from Cnet, and so far, haven't had any problems at all. Most of my antivirus/malware programs download thru cnet. I think you can trust Cnet, but that's just me. :laptop:

Agreed. Never any problems with cnet.

If it doesn't work getting past the password, reinstall windows. It'll most likely be faster with a fresh install anyhow.

Thanks guys. I didnt get any disc`s with it, just the computer and the only operating system I have(on disc) is XP which is what I`m using now, the locked computer has vista and is a little newer so maybe support wise a better thing to keep.

Do you have any anti-virus/anti-spyware software on your messed up puter? If not, I would install a good program(I use Avast) and run it...it might be able to fix it. Whatever you do, with either puter, GET AN ANTIVIRUS program. Get ONE good one(realtime protection), and let it do what it does....keep your puter safe. You can also use a Malware/Spyware program as a separate function. For that purpose, I have Malwarebytes, and Super Antispyware. All are free, and have kept this puter I have safe, and free of "gotchas" for several years.

Thanks for the ADvice..Yes I have spybot,malwarebytes,microsoft sucurity essentials, I have gone to trend micro`s house call to double check..I`m thinking this is hardware related, faulty RAM or power supply something overheating or clogging up, I clean out my computer vents regularly, take the cover off and blow out any dust..nice and clean inside.
When it goes it shuts off then when I try to turn it back on the hard drive spins fast then slow, spins up then down again and on and on meanwhile nothing is on the screen, wont load and no signal on the screen.

It has additional tables you can add to it if those do not work but frankly it has always worked with the base files when I used it on most users computers.

Your personal PC almost sounds like it has a failing or dead Powersupply.

Agreed that the power supply might be going bad. But it can also be heat related. Check your motherboard for any popped capacitors. They look like little cylinders with triangular silver shapes on top. They should all be flat. If even one of them is showing an elevated or raised state, the motherboard is shot.

cNet is OK. I also use Majorgeeks.com and they have a troubleshooting forum too.

zman, Cnet is safe/cool, your PC needs to be replaced, and Vista is on extended support by MS until 2017. Anyway you look at it it sounds like your on borrowed time bro. :Awe: Do they have FRYs stores where you live? For as little as $300 you can get a new tower for your PC.

Thanks all, I`ll use Cnet and see if I can open the computer. all else fails i`ll buy a new one. I cant say it owes me anything..I bought it the same year Vista came out and it has ran fine since.
