I saved an ebay seller store that was selling replacement speakers for the Hondaline (Clarion) boxes that have a higher wattage rating. Nice to have a bolt pattern that matches up. I want to replace mine in the near future. If you want that info, let me know. I'll look it up.

Yeah...wattage. I don't understand the "wattage" thing. It doesn't matter what wattage speaker I install(the wing)100w-300w, they all sound the same. Anything past 1/2 volume on the knob and it distorts badly. Yes, I have the wires right, and 4ohm speakers(3 sets). I haven't tried any expensive brands yet because I'd have to hear an improvement first.

I'm for sure not an "audiophile" but the output of the amplifier should be matched with appropriate speakers by wattage. The watt rating of the stock Clarion speakers is 20 watts. The speakers I saw were 40 watt rating....just a little bit higher which I thought might help with distortion at the higher volume levels. But going to 100 watt rated speakers or more with the stock amplifier, you now don't have the power needed to drive the speakers. Maybe the distortion I get at higher volume levels is due to the fact that both the amplifier and speakers are over 30 years old. If and when I get the other speakers, I'll let you know if they helped  .

THANKS for all the help!!! Here's where I stand. I'm having nothing but trouble with the Clarion Type II so this winter I'm yanking the fairing and pulling all the components...(controller, tuner, amp, and whatever else is inside the fairing. Then I'm sending the entire system to an outfit in Ohio who specializes in these systems. Meanwhile, I dropped the 200 watt blutooth ready, ipod docking radio from my CB9ooc into the cassette hole. It fit right into the locking frame with a minor modification, and I can unlock it and take it with me with very little trouble. I'm sure I blew the 20 watt Clarion speaker sending at least 50 watts to it, (50 watts per channel, 4 channels). I'm sure I've damaged the other speaker as well. They really counded good at first, but cruising the countryside with the volume cranked blew it. I've ordered a couple Pyle speakers that can handle the wattage, and will bolt right in, (I hope), they're 4""). I still have music, while waiting for the new music, I just don't "crank it. I'v actually found a couple Clarions on EBAY that I'll most likely buy so when the Clarion system is fixed I'm all set to go. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE HELP!!!

I have 4" pyles on my bike... they are ok. but not loud.
great speakers though.they were around 50$
the guys at the local stereo shop told me to buy the next more expensive set they have... made by infinity. around 90$
they explained that its not only the wattage rating but each speaker is rated by efficiency also... like how many db's they'll produce with 50w.
this is what I need because the 120w. amp is a good draw for the charging system and the speakers are the best place to gain that back.
ok heres the bad news.... USUALLY speakers that are more efficient cost more money... ha ha go figure right.

BTW good stereo systems used to be rated at half volume.

I'v decided that the stereo system works fine, and I'm going to work on headsets with intercom and cb next.

Hey Jim....the speakers I put in my Vetter system are the Infinity set! (Best Buy - I paid around $69) My right speaker has blown out. No visible signs of cracks, but rattles and distorts real bad with low bass. I had them in for 3 years with my Sony radio (rated for 52 W 4 ohms).

Well, I received the new Pyle speakers yesterday, and wouldn't you know it, one of them is faulty. The "cone" was detached from the frame at one point, and the outside ring fell off. I sent them back today, and am hoping I will get my $$$ back, including shipping to and from. We'll see. , Back to square one. I've decided to consult an expert and get a set "suited" for the 200 watt radio. I don't mind paying more if they'll sound well, and last more that a season of riding.

Thanks again for all the input!!!

I'd check out a local auto sound shop.
We have one here that set up my work truck over 10 years ago with a 12" bass, 600 watt amp, 2 way speakers in the doors and 2 tweeters. Not out in the weather but I've been very happy with the setup and the price was very good.
After using these guys I came to the conclusion it's best to ask the experts that deal with sound systems every day. They know what works best together.
All the ohms stuff in audio I get lost.
