Stator on my 78 GL1000 finally went. My 5 amp fuse for brake lights had blown and I only had a 10 amp to replace it with. Shortly after my neutral light started staying on all the time but dimmer when not actually in neutral. Shortly after that my stator went completely. Not sure if these are connected. I am not interested in the poor boy conversion, so I suppose just wish me luck and a speedy recovery. Thanks all.

Good luck with your stator!!!! I had atool too fix mine a few months ago, made the job real simple. I went too Oregon, and when I got back my son had replaced it (got rid of the know it all who was gumming up the works). :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:

Okay so I got the new stator in and got the bike all zipped up, or so I thought. Something electrical is not right. I only get spark when I turn the key, but not when I hit the ignition button. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. :help:

One ground connects below the shifter pedal and the other goes on the other side to a head bolt right? If it's just those two then they are tight

It's electronic ignition, not sure if it's a dyna or not. i've been dreading an electrical problem with this bike because the wiring is a serious frankenstein job. there is no point system.

hmmmm well dr frankenstein time is now to figure this out and get wiring up tpo par for the new stator ... i would first hook iggy syrai to battery and see if it will run .. if it dose then time to go through and update wiring ... if you need halp here maybe a more detailed plan can be posted

thanks Joe, I will try that. more help would be awesome as electrical is not my strong suit. Not the first time you've helped me out of a bind.

ok ive got some time for i bit .... not knowing what you have its hard for me say a lot ... but most emectronic ignitions have a power wire ... on most dynas this is a fused red wire that hooks to key on hot wire ... 78 bike like yours it probably hooked up to the green and white wire ... should have power when key is on .... anyway this wire is the one to hook to battery possitive to try and see if it runs ... doing this is like leaving the key on so disconnect each time you try it not to forget and cook the coils... this bike sounds like mine did yrs ago ...what a night mare it was getting it up to par .... seeming strait through wire just no good ...especially around coils and the double piggy back ballist resitors and wire melting heat degrader were at ...just joking ... that kind of crap can only last so long ...like spark plug wires plug ends and resistor and so on ...

oh that joedrum talk for ignition :smilie_happy: sorry

Sounds like the ignition is hooked up to run through the ballast resistor and the bypass at the start button either is not hooked up or the button isn't connecting it.

Update: I won't bore you with details but lets just saycolor blindness and electrical wiring don't work well together. Anyway, the bike is running but still not charging. I guess I need to do more research. Is the regulator the next thing to check?
