Hi to everyone:

I had the timing belts changed and when I got it back it has a "tappet" sound on the left side. Does this mean that the tappets have gone out of adjustments because the belts are now changed and it changed the tappet clearances? Mechanic says tappet adjustments shouldn't need to be done for 100,000 miles. I have 55,000 miles on it and it ran great and made no noises before the belts were changed. He also says it's 5-6 hours for adjusting that one side tappets?

Sure hope it IS just a rocker arm noise, and not a valve kissing a piston! Did whomever did the belts loosen off on the rockers to install the belts? If so, he/she may not have gotten them adjusted properly. Otherwise, there would be no logical explanation for a rocker arm to just all of a sudden start tapping after changing the belts....as far as I know. :?

stop running it ...and check the compression.....nothing they are saying makes any sense at all ......theres no waqy you change timing belts and it comes back making more noise theses peoplel are full of it and trying to make a fool out of you ......like anybody else can do they have messed something up bigtime......take the plugs out of it and turn it over slow and see if you can feel it hitting or not .....like i said it dont sound right

he said he never removed the tappet covers, just had to keep readjusting the belt to get it quieter and running right

Kept re-adjusting the belt!!!! While he was "re-adjusting" the belt, he may have damaged the valves! More than one tooth off on these belts and you can (and most likely will) inccur damage! :rtfm:

Wow! You need to find a different mechanic!

Like Joe says they are full of it.

I agree, don't run it anymore until you or a competent mechanic that knows these engines has checked the valve timing.
As it is you may be looking at 1 or more bent valves which means the head has to come off for repairs.

Oh, tappet adjustment takes all of 30 minutes for both sides.
